Are you talking about the on demand units such as Rinnai tankless hot water heaters? If so, I have 2 in my house and I love them. They take up very little space as are super efficient on gas. They are expensive, but often times people don't realize just how expensive because based on the size of your water system, you might need multiple units. I had to have 2 because I am feeding 4 bathrooms and to be sure we'd have enough output with multiple showers running.

I particularly liked the tiny amount of space they take up. My 2 tank less heaters take up less room than a standard tank, which was important to me for finishing my basement.

One thing I learned was that they are very sensitive to gas flow problems. This past winter, the gas regulator outside my house was starting to stick and so the pressure wasn't quite right and neither would light off.

    Hope that helps!

I would go way with a gas tankless hot water heater, but my house is all electric.

10-4. I read it [post #4] as if you had said that you would have gone the way of gas tankless but you only had electric. Carry on...

If electric I would need to rewire the main breaker box, and have a 70' copper wired to a tankless tank. If gas I need to do a LP tankless tank, and I feel that wouldn't be as cheap to use it vs. the electric Heat pump hot water heater.

My dad has a heat pump water heater.

Pros: CHEAP to run. That plus the tax credit makes it pay for itself in no time

Cons: Loud. It broke and GE fixed it... but it took forever to get the part. They Fedex'd the wrong thing about 8 times, the first guy broke something else trying to fix it, total trainwreck.

I'm definitely going tankless HWH when my conventional one goes. Germany has had this technology for over 30 years--don't know why it took the US so long.

They're cheaper to run than conventional electric water heaters, how much...???
You'll get some additional A/C to boot. Granted, it'll only be in the space this thing is located, but...I'm sure every little bit helps in central FL.

Thinking it should be about $300 saving per year, and the AC cooling would be nice since it's in my garage.

A conventional 40 gal. tank is $300, heat-pumps are $1,400+ so that saving wont show up for 4+ years.
I'd talk to whoever your A/C guy is, because he'll be fixing it, and then the local utility, to find out about rebates, etc.

    Good luck.

My neighbor had a solar hot water system, and she stated that it didn't make a nice reduce pay for electric bill. But I like my solar pool water heater system...
