Walked into a new audio shop close by called "Sweet Spot Audio" no affl.
It happened to be a slow day (perfect) dropped the wife at the airport and there was no rush and only a couple customers stopped in to pick up some preorders. I spent nearly 4 hours just listening and BS'ing with the owner (great guy), When ready he wants to bring the S1.4 and S3.4 to my house to see real world soundstage,,,(thought that was awesome) to see what shoe fits.
I am a 40 something newbie who likes music but little knowledge as some of you guys about the awesome gear some cost effective, vintage, highend, tubes, SS, integrades, and seperates etc.
Audition took place in 2 rooms approx. 10x12 a nd 12x14 then a large area all moderately deck with carpeted walls and corner traps with 3 systems each and a sweet spot chair to roll around. In each of these rooms plus room to room we moved gear to show the variety and combos highend to low, CD, music servers and vinyl etc.
Gear auditioned
Wharfedale 10.0 with this little tube/IPOD combo 8watt tube amp...banging lil' combo realy impressive all around sound $300pr speakers and $600 Ipod tube amp.
Next was my favorite today was Dynaudio Contour S1.4 and ProLogue Premium Integrated Amplifier first go around with tubes since I was a kid
and WOW listened to Steely Dan AJA, Diana Krall, Sade, EltonJohn, The Ramones....
beautiful 3Dimensional sound, bass seamed to reach the lower 30's, highs were crisp but non-fatiguing mids were tranparent....listened to the same with (Naim integrated although his favorite with SS but not mine). He also brought in a CJ-CAV-50 but I personally thought ProLogue Premium ate its lunch.
Then we went bigger to the Dynaudio Contour S5.4 in the large show room area not decked out with treamnts another WOW with Naim seperates, Rega P-7, Rega CDP. Huge soundstage demo'ing same music...I thoought I was at a brilliant music theater at moments.
Anyway I am on a mission to build my 2chnl dream and knowing as much as you do that the journey is part of the fun. I want to thank CP for enlightning me on the thoughts and tools I need to make a decision on my system...and knowing that I will most likely enjoy the adventure as I have today. Although keeping an open mind that buy/sell/trade will be a probabilty in my future.
My only regrets to a great day as next Friday while I am in Dallas for Lonestar Audio Fest, I have scheduled a private listening with Usher looking at minidancer 2's with R1.5 class A/AB amp and I did not get a chance to demo Dynaudio S3.4 for a comparison as he Sweet Spot had sold their demo.
I will also, be anxiously waiting to hear the Polk LSiM at the fest also.
Todays manufacturers included Naim, Dyna, Rega, Dali, Cambridge, CJ, Wharedale etc.
Moral to the story is all especially newbie's as I is to get your ears on equipment and use CP, internet, and books to guide you not give you the answers.
