connections advice requested...

Hello,

I have a Yamaha HTR5660 6.1 channel receiver, Denon DVD900 DVD player and Polk Audio R50 speakers.

I need advice on:

1) what is the best type of cable for connecting the speakers to the receiver (I heard about banana plugs). Any suggestions for brand/model numbers?

2) how should I connect my DVD player to the TV through the receiver and the TV to the receiver? I have heard of component cables (Y, Cr, Gr) for best picture quality, but I am not sure about the hookups - like I connect the 3 component cables from the DVD player to the TV, but how should I also connect the TV and DVD player to the receiver? My TV is a Sony with component cable connections available.

Please help with connecting all this together and the cables I should purchase - I'm a complete newbie at this.

    Firstly, welcome to the Club. You'll like it here.

    Radio Shack has nice ones at reasonable prices.

    On your video connections... If you are not running more sources than a DVD player, then there's no reason to go through your AVR with the video. Your TV has at least two input options, yes? And likely has three.

    But if you chose to run the video through your AVR, yes, run component cable from the AVR to your Sony. As for the Denon to Yammie, you have two choices: component and digital (coax or fiber optic.... guess that's three choices).

    Hello,

    Thanks a lot for the help :)

    I was down at Madison, WI over the long weekend and went to AmericanTV and bought myself some rather expensive stuff in the end :(

    For connecting DVD audio to Receiver, I got Monster Interlink Lightspeed Reference optical cable (1m).

    I got 2 boxes of component video cables - from DVD to Receiver and from Receiver to TV. Both are Monster Video 2 (1m).

    For the speaker wire, I got a 20 foot spindle 16 gauge wire without banana plugs - I guess for now I will simply connect the speakers without banana plugs. Is that a good idea? The salesperson said it was just fine. I'll cut the wire in 2 parts - 10 ft each for the speakers.

    Well - it all added up to 205$ :( and I hope it's money well spent. It's my foray in to "high" end audio equipment.

    I'll be connecting all my equipment in a couple of weeks. I'll keep you guys updated on the progress :)

    Welcome to the forum.

    You should be just fine. Monster Cable is an affordable level of interconnects. Be thankful you only spent $205. This hobby gets way more expensive than that. ;)

    Yes you will be ok using bare wire for terminal connections. When and if you do think about banana plugs, try and avoid the Monster Cable "Twist-n-Crimp"...or whatever they are called. I personally think they are terrible....but thats just me. Radio Shack has these, and they are cheap:

    They are pretty foolproof, and provide a nice solid mechanical connection.

    Hello,

    Well that certainly helps - I'm glad I got the right cables. And I read about Monster Cable banana plugs being not very acceptable in some other posts in this forum. I'll keep the RadioShack ones in mind when I plan on buying them.

    I'll prolly showcase my stuff once its all ready :)
