Ghetto Subwoofer Set-up -- your thoughts ;)

Ok...
So I loaned my Yamaha RX-V870 & JBL PW-10 to my daughter and son-in-law for their HT set-up (they have a nice LCD LG TV). (along with an Infinity Minuette 5-speaker Satellite System)
In the meantime, I have a Yamaha DSP E-300 that I've owned from new (forever), and I've been operating it without a Sub since last summer.
So last week i bought a BSR E-3000 Equalizer (my first ever equalizer:)). and I happen to have an extra integrated amp laying around (yamaha CA-610) and an extra pair of speakers that have a 10' woofer in them (KLH 17s).... so...
I've used a splitter on the LFE output of the Yamaha DSP E300 and run it into the BSR E3000, set the equalizer curve to boost 125HZ and lower.... and run the output of the equalizer into the auxiliary jacks of the Yamaha CA-610.... and fiddled with the volume knob till i feel like i'm getting "some" sub-/ bass / boost.
has anyone else ever tried to glom together a subwoofer in this fashion?
