Hello everybody just wanted to check in and ask a few questions i recently had to sell my 1.2tl,s on the bay due to the economic downturn thats been putting a strain on my wallet but i made out pretty good on there sale so now im falling back on a pair of 1C,s that i had originally bought before i purchased the 1.2,s and had sold them to my uncle and he had them for about 13 years when one day he gave me a call and asked if i wanted them back and also stated that they no longer were working so i of course said yes (duh) and i brought them back home and that was abuot 7 years ago so until just recently when the 1.2,s sold i brought them back out and had to replace almost every driver in both cabinets so instead of mixmatching old with new i decided to replace all the mids and replace all the tweets with RDO 194,s so my question is-is there a way to test the crossover on a pair of 1C,s to see or tell if there's anything wrong or questionable on there current state they seem to sound alright. And how do the new mid replacements from POLK compare to the originals. And thirdly i have been reading that the new RDO,s will take some break in time and is the same true with the new mids.

Sorry you were forced to sell the 1.2s. I had to do the same thing after a divorce. Any hoo, yes, both the 6.5s and tweeters will need some "break-in" time.

I'm sure many will chime in about replacing caps and resistors in your crossovers - if for no other reason than the age factor. They can fall out of their original tolerance values. And they aren't the greatest quality to begin with. Polyswitches (tweeter protection) often need replacement or removal - choice is yours on that.

Sounds like you are well on your way to getting them whipped back in to shape. Remember, all you need is money! And time.

The search feature is your friend as that info is posted all over this forum.

Well i just recieved my package of caps and resistors from Sonicraft along with some new posts and some Eutectic solder cost me 307.00 but from what i have read it will all be worth it when im done so here goes wish me luck. All i have to do is shut them down long enough to work on them. And i think they sound great now and i cant wait to see whats in store after the mod so thanks to all who helped out i will report back when i am done.

One thing to remember is those Sonicaps require a good amount of break-in time before they will be sounding their best. At times during the break-in period you will swear they sound awful. Allow them to play for 200 hours before rendering any critical judgement.

You'll probably spend as much referb'ing them as you got for your 1.2TL's. Especially if you buy new drivers vs. playing the waiting game on ebay or here. If all the drivers are shot (doubtful, but that's what you stated).

    Used let's say $25/driver X 8 = 200.00

    RD0194-1 tweets X 4 = 204.00

    X-over refresh with Clarity Caps/Mills resistors = ~ $200. W/Sonic caps closer to $300.

If you can't find enough used drivers and IF Polk carries all the new drivers

    $45 X 8 = $360

I guess this scenario is probably still a little less than you sold your 1.2's for, I'm guessing, but not by a lot.

On the positive side it would be rare all the drivers are shot.

P.s. I guess I misread your posts.........it seems you already have all the parts. I guess I don't understand why you asked how much it would cost if you already spent the money.

Well yes it has cost a bit more than i had figured on but the 1.2"s fetched 2600.00 on ebay alot more than we had counted on we were thinking we would get around 1500 to 1800 realisticly but the last 30 seconds of the auction and they just want crazy so i decided to fix up the 1C,s and power them with an old Adcom GFA 555 II that i have because i also sold my 565 Monoblocks that did not do so well. But anyway after all the dust had settled i spent a little more than a week researching the X-over upgrade here on the forum and found 3 different fellow polkies who had good informative and detailed posts that prompted me to go ahead and take the plunge. And so today i went ahead and did the modification and tried them out this evening and so far i really like what i am hearing but like everyone keeps saying it will take some time before they settle down but so far i have 5 hours on them this evening and i will come back once in a while to let everyone know how its going

Well i have 40 hours on my 1Cs since i modified the crossover with Sonicraft caps and new resistors 2 weeks ago and the first thing i noticed is they are louder requiring less volume but i do have a concern with an ocasional static like noise that seems to be coming from the tweeters now im thinking that this is either normal for the caps breaking in or somthing might be wrong and you have to listen very closely because it is not heard very often and you have to be listening very closely to notice it even if and when it does happen. And also i am having one heck of a time trying to get pics to load onto this site only because some fellow Polkies dont believe that i have ever done the modification but until i get this pic thing figured out thats just the way its gonna be for now but i will get them up sooner or later so until then thanks again to everybody who took the time to help me out and of course i still have a long way to go before there broke in
