Such a list doesn't really exist.

There's no such thing as "best", because everyones needs and personal tastes differ.

Some good brands to look into are Pioneer, Onkyo, Denon, Marantz and Yamaha. There are many other fantastic brands out there too though.

More information would help. What are your primary uses for your receiver going to be? Strictly home theater? Mainly music? A mix of both? What type of connectivity do you need? What's your projected price range?

Personally, I've always liked Onkyo receivers more than others. I'd really like to get my ears on one of the newer Pioneer Elite units with the ICE amps though.
    The nirvana inducer-
    APC H10 Power Conditioner
    Marantz UD5005 universal player
    Parasound Halo P5 preamp
    Parasound HCA-1200II power amp
    PolkAudio LSi9's/PolkAudio SDA 2A's/PolkAudio Monitor 7A's
    Audioquest Speaker Cables and IC's

+1 to comfortablycurt. Your call on what your into. I recently upgraded from a Sony STR-DG920 to a Pioneer SC35. IMHO - I found that alone made every bit of difference on both 2 channel and 5.1. Adding a pair of SDA2's (Craigslist last week) put the icing on the cake.
Pioneer Elite SC-35, Polk RTA (Real Time Array) 12's,
Polk Monitor 40 surrounds, Polk CSiA4 Center,
    Polk PSW125, Sharp LC-46D62U,
    Panasonic DMP-BD85, Harmony One,
iMac streaming an Apple TVII, or Squeezebox Touch
Bedroom Rig~Sony STRDG-920, Polk Monitor 60 fronts, Polk RM6750 Satellites and Sub, Panasonic DMP-BD85
    Rabbit Hole Rig~Yamaha CA1010, Yamaha CT1010, Polk SDA 2A's, Teac A1500 R2R

What speakers, what size room, music tastes, typical listening levels, features desired?

Please don't think me being rude but this is like asking for a list of cars best to worst. Needing it for listening to music is like saying you need a car for driving. You need to be much more specific as to what you need it for. Like saying "I need a car for commuting but I want loads of luxury and don't care about fuel consumption" is far different than "I need it for off roading but it must have tons of power for climbing".

As stated above room size, speaker matching, type of music, volume level, heaviy pounding bass or amazingly articulate highs, able to withstand beer spillage from parties. Stuff like that is what you need to be specific about.
    SDA-1C (full mods)
    Carver TFM-55
    NAD 1130 Pre-amp
    Rega Planar 3 TT/Shelter 501 MkII

Revox A77 Mk IV Dolby reel to reel
    Thorens TD160/Mission 774 arm/Stanton 881S Shibata
    Nakamichi CR7 Cassette Deck
Rotel RCD-855 with modified tube output stage
    Cambridge Audio DACmagic Plus
    ADC Soundshaper 3 EQ
    Ben's IC's

Easiest way to find one... Pick your budget, decide what features you want, decide new vs used, go to amazon.com and narrow it down by doing research and reading reviews. Once you've narrowed it down to 2 or 3 come back and ask the question again.
