If you didn't put in your credit card info, I wouldn't be concerned.

I wouldn't even be concerned... honestly, it doesn't really matter, for you, if your information is stolen... what can they do? charge some stuff? you don't pay for that crap... federal law, I believe. charges have to be made by the person who owns the card and signed the contract... I lose my CC/debit card all the time.... I call for a new piece of plastic that has a different number, no big deal.

edit: not to mention that this has happened to tons of people. If anyone actually bothers to use the CC info, it will be something that every CC company is dealing with

Identity theft/fraud is a huge problem and very dangerous, if it wasn't then hackers and cons wouldn't dedicate their lives and so much money trying to get at it, there is lots of money at stake, "your" money and "my" money.

agreed... have a friend that recently had a credit card skimmed at the gas station used to pull a credit report for yet another victim (presumably to open a line of credit). the risk is real and serious.

Don't have any sensitive data in my PS3 account..just emails and pswrd. No sweat there.

Still, you'd think SONY would have top security people in place..or not?

You'd think that... but according to their rep, they're having to call in an external security company to remedy the situation. Kinda' scary.

I guess they shouldn't have gone after GeoHot... I hope Sony didn't honestly think this was going to end well, or in the court room.

There are a lot of smart, disenfranchised with our government and political system, people out there. This is what happens when people feel is your government no longer represents her people but corporate interests. This is messed up in so many ways.

    Here is the crazy thing:

Stores are allowing up to $25 without signature or even seeing the cards. It's $100 at the pump!

Give someone a few hundred cards and dear lord...

I wonder if Sony was following PCI compliancy guidelines?

Not all anti-government people think they are representing corporate interests... there are other special interests, you know ;)

Oh, I know that. So does TJ Maxx / Marshalls  I tend to lump the Wikileaks crowd with the disenfranchised group. Look what happened to MC/Visa.

I believe Sony's troubles are in good part to this whole thing with GeoHot.

I'm still in disbelief that in this day and age of mandated PCI compliancy that card holder data was STILL compromised. It took us a lot of work to make our product PCI compliant and felt it was dubious at best the protections it was going to ultimately provide the card holder.

if this was geohot and friends, I doubt it's about CC theft. If you cancel your card, what can they do? I'm assuming everyone will be canceling shortly, or already have.

It's the biggest possible black eye that they could hand out IMO.

I don't believe it's a serious attempt at getting CC information. It's more about sending a message to Sony. Sony spat in the face of hackers like geohot and hackers are spitting back. From here on out, however Sony handles the situation will determine their future in gaming. IMO though, it's the beginning of the end for Sony.

I got hit earlier today. I've been with my bank for over 12 years and have never once had a problem with my CC. This morning for the first time ever I had an unauthorized charge, from somewhere in NC. While it technically could be a coincidence, it is highly unlikely given the timing.

You guys better keep an eye on your accounts.

This is why when I need to use a credit card for an online purchase, I use a pre-paid and load just enough to cover that purchase.

Very sorry to hear that. From what I know from people who have had this happen in the past, CC companies are VERY good at taking fraudulent charges off your account. Just report it. They'll start an investigation, not hold you accountable until they finish, and are pretty good at figuring out that you didn't make the charge. And they'll likely overnight you a replacement card. CCs are just great ways to protect yourself against online crooks. It really is a buffer against crooks, not a liability, provided you monitor your card regularly and report mischief in a timely manner.

Not so easy to fix is identity theft involving SSNs. With an email address, crooks can send a phishing email trying to get it, and with other information like a home address and birthdate they can do a lot of damage that isn't easy to fix. This is the one to watch out for. And IMO, companies like Sony and MS should never have access to information like birthdates anyways. Just a legal statement that you are over 18 or 21 should be all that's needed. But isn't worth nearly as much to their marketing departments as a full birthdate.

Of course not. I despise hackers and want to see them buried. But a major intrusion like this doesn't bode well for Sony, no matter how you spin it. They may be doing all they can to fix the problem but in most peoples' eyes, it's something that shouldn't have happened in the first place. And they're already facing a lawsuit over it. I want to see Sony come out on top but it just doesn't look good at the moment.
