Morning guys, I'll start off by telling you I have had my sepreates since May09
and when I got them I was blown away especially compared to the HTIB I had
before. When I hooked up the system I used true HDMI cables for all connections and I thought it would be ok. But being me I also like watching tv
with tunes going on at the same time .To do this now comes in optical toslink which does what I want but I'm positive the quality of movies is not the same. Now a touchy subject, I own a Yamaha RX-V665 which has so many
setings w/ prologic this and DTS that and Neo6 decoding and truth be told I get the best sound and seperation w/ the 7channel stereo setting. I did the speaker set up and all is fine and went through all there projected settings.
So the big question is, did I lose that higher quality sound by going to optical
or amI just getting used to my set -up. I am not impressed w/ movies on my rig then go to a friends house and here a door creaking opening around the corner (if you know what I mean).I'm open to change settings but I do like watching a silent game w/ tunes a-blasting.I have never used my tv.s speakers ever......LW

Usually I'm a pretty smart guy, but for some reason I can barely understand what your trying to say here. Even your sig line is a tad difficult to see what you have going on.
But..... here goes. HDMI will result in the best sound quality ( all HD audio codecs), so when you bring in the Toslink you do lose quality there. The other suggestion I would make is to run the calibration setup with your receiver and tweak from there with an SPL meter and tape measure to get a tad better result.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Here is what I would do if you can hook it up this way! If worse comes to worse, when watching a movie select Dolby Digital and not the 7 channel stereo.
When watching TV and dvd: use hdmi and set the Yamaha to auto for best sound.
When wanting to watch tv and listen to tunes with the same rig.
Plug optical cable into the dvd player and plug the other end into another optical input like MD or something that you are not using on the Yamaha.
If you like the tunes on 7 channel stereo then turn the input to MD and listen to your music while watching your tv.
This should allow the tv picture to come through as well as here your dvd through optical.
If you are watching your tv or dvd and your sound is set to 7 channel stereo setting you should switch it back to 7.1 digital or 5.1 digital.
The 7 channel stereo is sending all left channel info to all left speakers and the same for the right. Discrete signals are not being sent to the separate channels/speakers. So if you watching a movie and a door slams off screen to the right and back of you, you are hearing it in all of your right channel speakers, not the back right that Dolby Digital would send it to.(I am assuming)
If you want to watch movie switch back to your dvd input and you should have the benefits of the hdmi sound.
You should be able to assign inputs in your settings.
If this is not the info you had asked about, I am sure someone on here can assist!Good luck!

GFONG,I did what you wanted me to do w/ the h/u of the HDMI cord into HDMI 2 For CDs and DVDs I'm on HDMI 1 for tv and that is fine . What is not happening is the silent tv viewing w/ tunes going at the same time. I did plug an optical into the dvd player and the other end to the Yamaha, but clearly I'm missing something and could you tell me what the MD input is ,this might be the last piece of the puzzle. Thanks so far. Please get back to me so I can finish this up. I'm really glad you understood exactly what I wanted to do....LW2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

You may have to reassign the input for the audio. Such as you have HDMI port 1-video HDMI, audio optical.
This means that the video will be displayed from HDMI but the audio would be coming from the optical input. -
I am confused a little as well, but to pick out a single point - "So the big question is, did I lose that higher quality sound by going to optical or amI just getting used to my set -up"
You will find a loss of SQ if you are running 7 channel, then downgraded from HDMI to TOSlink. The fiber optic connection can only handle 5.1, so you have eliminated 2 channels from your listening field.
I appologize if this wasn't really what you were looking for. Also - I've noticed this for a long time, and I figure it might be worth a shot to ask. Do you type all of this info into another program (Word or Dragon?) and then paste it here? You're sentences are all broken up and the spacing isn't quite right. But it always seems to be consistant which leads me to ask.

NO,Just very bad w/ this machine first of all, then I write like I talk w/ bad grammar and run on sentences. I really know what I want to say but it just comes out badly. The consensis is better than70=30 for those who understand what I'm trying to say. One other tid bit about my life is that I was mired in heavy substance abuse and computers were not exactly that important to me at that time, and it just passed me by.Kinda like Ted Kisinsky even though he was a techno genous who hated it.It should get better over time,be patient this has been a great outlet for me and now I have other things to spend money on if you know what I mean.....LW2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E
