Oppo BDP-93

I have had this unit for five days and today I decided to spend some time with it. Firstly, I would like to say that they do an excellent job of packaging. It comes double boxed and the player is in a custom soft bag (nice touch). The remote, hdmi cable etc.... comes in a nice little box complete with the oppo logo. The real pleasure is when you take this beutiful player out of the bag. Very nice fit and finish on this piece of gear.

I hooked it up to my new 54 inch Panisonic G series plasma and connected it to my home network. This was very painless as the menu structure in this player is very intuitive. I accomplished this without need of the user manual,which by the way also smacks of quality.

I grabbed a bluray rip of avatar off one of my drives and streamed it to the tv. The video quality of this player is much superior to my old Sony BDP-S470 as is the sound quality. The new tv could also be a factor in the video quality as my previous plasma was a U series Panisonic.

Next I put a dvd of an old tv series "The Invaders", which is in 4:3 format. I changed video settings in the player to stretch the image to full screen and was impressed with the reult. Image did not appear distorted at all!!!

Now it was time to try out the audio. I put in a sacd of DSOM and sat back with my eyes closed and enjoyed the wonderful sound comming from my SDAS.

One negative, if you can call it that, was that when you use the remote to switch between menu choices in the player it seems sluggish. This is something done better by the Sony player.

In conclusion, I have no reservations recommending this player. The $499.00 price tag which I paid was a bargain in my opinion.

Thanks for the quick review. I have a feeling my Panny BD is starting to kick the bucket, so the Oppo will likely be my next purchase.

Yes it does stream netflicks (USA ONLY),Picassa, Blockbuster.

Hello once again, I not to big on the H/T scene and do not even own a ,blue-ray player, I have heard so much of these Oppos. At first I was going to be a moron and ask who OPPO was then went the Google route to find out that they are a Chinese high end blue -ray player maker w/ different divisions around the world.Now I do see what all the talk is about especially thOPPO-93
which seems to feedmost of your quality and effects requirements. See I learn alot of info and it does take a while to digest. The next project is the nameing or numbering of Polk Speakers, for me it's hard to follow and I prefer names lke FORTESII, OMM/WALSH 3XOS, ESS NHEIL AMT1, KLH 5s. It just seems easier for my simplemind not get confused w/RTIA ,SDA,SRS LSi.TSi, and everything inbetween. For serious Polksters it must be a breeze, I find it confusing as all hell,,,,,,,,LW

Does it play mkv, avi, iso, etc..from external HD? I am thinking of getting one.

I have tried avi and mkv from a flash drive and it works, so no reason to think it wouldn't from an external drive. I have not tried an iso but I am doubtful.

Only Polks you need to know about are the LSi15's!! That and the old monitors.

Dunno about that statement chief. Plenty of older polks hold up even by todays standards. Definately some gems in the older RT,LS, lines and of coarse the sda's. The rti and rtia lines are no slouch either and offer up a great bang for your buck.

Got a new BDP -95 last week, find the remote maddeningly slow. For a thousand dollar piece of gear would have hoped for better. Looks and sounds outstanding however.

Thank you, my newer Monitor Series II sound awesome, especially since I hooked them up to an amp.

I got a Harmony 650 remote, which seems to work much better than the Oppo remote.

So it does not have that half second lag? I would have assumed it was a processor on the player itself as opposed to the remote. Thank you for the info.

It does seem faster than the oppo. Another thing I notice, with the oppo remote you have to point right at the player vs the harmony that is much more forgiving. I love this thing.
