I am looking to get my parents some of the new TL series speakers and they currently have an old phillips bookshelf system that we can not really afford to replace at this time. I looked up the system and it is a Phillips FW775. It is listed as 6 ohm speakers for all the but the center channel and 12 ohms for that. I know that all of the TL's are 8 ohm and was curious if it would be ok to connect these to this old stereo.

I thought who better to ask then the folks here. Would it be ok?

    Hello PJ,
Your parents should be fine. It's distortion, no matter what the cause, that's harmful to speakers. Just tell them if they hear a fuzzy or harsh quality to the sound to reduce the playing volume until it goes away. In all likelihood that won't be a problem and they will enjoy the extra clarity and definition.
    Enjoy, Ken

So new development. I was able to score a pioneer vsx816 from a fellow polkie. I will have to keep the speakers for a little longer. Anything to worry about when running the 6 ohm speakers from an avr?

My last question was the opposite scenario. Maybe I just don't understand ohms. I know that the less ohms the harder it is to drive, but that's about all. Any advice would be appreciated.

Here's where you run into possible issues. If the AVR is rated at 8ohm and you are running 6ohm speakers, you run the risk of blowing both at loud and extreme volumes. At lower volumes you should be OK. Just be sure to follow the advice headed by Mr. Swauger.

Thanks. I will begetting some speakers soon. I just couldn't pass up the pioneer I got. Used the money I was going to spend on speakers for it.
