Great DVD's to try out

I have had my system for about 3-4 months now, and it has been awesome. Just thought I would list the DVD's that have blown both myself and friends away with the sound:

Gladitor 6.1
Star Wars I & II
LOTR Extended Version 6.1
Airforce One SuperBit
Matrix

I still have yet to watch:

Saving Private Ryan DTS
U-571

Anyone else have any suggestions? DVD's that utilize all channels and have a good amount of subwoofer action seem to be the best. Thanks for any info.

Hank

Saving Private Ryan along with Airforce One is probably some of the best sound out there...I doubt the superbit version is better than the original release, superbit only helps the picture right? Dont Forget Ice Age , probably the best sounding dvd of 2003

If you can find it, there's a single dvd version with DTS track they sell in canad, which I believe is sold on amazon's canadian website. There's also a 3 dvd set as well.

Superbit titles are DTS, so they do sound much better than the DD versions...IMHO.

I just saw Super Speedway at CC that is a collectors edition with added DTS encoding and bonus footage. I have the original but am tempted to get the DTS version.

I have found anoth jem that people continue to overlook The Blueman Group . It has some of the hardest hitting base and best imaging I have heard.

Damn, looks like I have to order some more DVD's. I forgot to mention that I saw Ice Age, We Were Soldiers, T2, and Blackhawk Down. Blackhawk Down was excellent.

Doc, how is LOTR The Two Towers - audio wise? I am going to wait for the extended version in November. The extended version of the first LOTR added so much to the movie.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Hank:

I'll let you know after tonight, but I'm expecting no less than spectacular considering FOTR. After all, they were all made at the same time with the same recording equipment and audio engineers. The soundtracks should really be almost identical from movie to movie (from an audio quality and bass power standpoint).

I agree the EE DTS version is/will be better, but there is no way I will wait until November to see what most HT buffs consider the most eagerly anticipated movie DVD of the year. I'll own both, that's for sure.

I forgot to add Das Boot to my list, and I will. I watched it again about 2 months ago and just loved it. It's funnier, grittier, and more real than U-571, but it is corny at times and lacks the technical refinement, music score, and incredible special effects that made U-571 famous. Both movies have very strong points and both succeed incredibly well in certain areas. The Das Boot bass is deep and powerful, but not cooked as hot as U-571 in DTS. Upping the sub level about 3-4 dB gets you right into U-571 DTS territory.

    Russ,
I bought the Super Speedway Mach II version on your recommendation.
It's fantastic but when I set up the audio option, there is
only Dolby digital and no DTS option. The box says it;s
DTS but I'm not seeing anywhere on teh dvd where you
have a dts option. Anyone else own this version? Is yours
    DTS?
    Thanks, Mike

    Russ,
I played around with the Mach II version and if you set up the
video for 16x9, the dts option is there. If you set the video for
    4x3, it's dolby digital.
What chapters are your favorites for showing off your system?
    The sound is fantastic.

I still have to get Mach II. I watched Saving Private Ryan DTS, that was truly amazing. I also enjoyed LOTR:The Two Towers, can't wait for the extended version.

In Saving Private Ryan the first 20 minutes are unreal. Then the tank scene towards the end of the movie. When the tank was getting close and the dirt was moving due to the vibrations, my couch was shaking from the SVS :)

The best shoot out scene ever filmed: Heat. (DeNiro, Pacino, Kilmer)

Who can forget Metallica? Even if you don't like them or their music, you can't deny that Lars Ulrich is a master of the double bass kick drum. Try every song on the album "And Justice For All". My favorite song is #4, "One". If you want to see how fast & accurate your subwoofer is, give it a try.
Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo.
