I am thinking of buying a pair of Monitor 10s for $150.00. Is that a fair price? They appear to be in good condition. Also, are they as good as the 10b series and what is the difference?

The main difference between the different models is they have different tweeters. It's difficult to know which you are looking at without a picture. I would say that's not a great, get there at all costs price, but if you want a pair right now it's not too bad.

Wouldn't hurt to try offering less, I gave $90.00 for some 10As.

Just depends on condition- I paid 200 for my 10As, but they were from the original owner and were immaculate- zero scratches, unblemished grills, even the owners manual. Worth every penny to me, but I love the sound. Put new fuses in them ASAP- made a BIG difference in mine. And gdb is right; they're worth exactly what he can get someone to pay for them. When you find the right ones you'll love them.

They will sound even better when the fuses get burned in.

I just picked these up for 140.00. Not immaculate but in really good condition. I think they are 10As. I don't see any fuses to replace. Are they on the inside? These tweeter sound really nice. But could I upgrade to newer tweeters if needed?

Welcome to the forum Greg! Nice pair of 10s. They appear to be the same as the ones I have. There are no fuses on the inside. The tweeter is protected by a polyswitch on the inside that takes the place of the fuse that was used in the older models. It acts like a circuit breaker. If it trips the tweeter will shut off and then the polyswitch will reset when it cools down. You can upgrade the tweeters with RDO-194s if you choose to do so.

You'll like the 10s. Most people here either find their old Polls at Goodwillor the dump:biggrin::biggrin: Before you do any upgrading listen to them for a while. Then come back here and let us know your impressions.

Boy these are sweet speakers. My first set of Real Polks. I am no doubt a novice but know good sound when I hear it. Thanks for the info. Amazing speakers. I think I'm hooked.

What is the best way to clean the Grills. Soap and Water? They are a little dirty. And there are a few frays on them but not bad.

Just go to a fabric store or order from parts express.com and replace the fabric its easier than washing the cloth grills. Plus u will get the wood frames wet and then u will really b in trouble then since there made out of PB.

You can also clean the grills really well with Woolite rug and fabric cleaner. It is a foam that doesn't have a lot of liquid in it. When possible, I put mylar sheets between the mdf on the back side and use the cleaner on the outside with a soft rag.

I've also had very good luck getting rid of minor frays with an inverted lighter flame. Just approach the fray very, very slowly and with a steady hand and it will slowly "melt" the snag and suck it back down. It's pretty amazing how well this works.

I use a small vacuum cleaner first to get the dust off and a damp cloth to remove stubborn spots. Stains are something I've never had to deal with. I've read here and other forums that the grille cloth is fairly easy to replace. If you decide to replace the material just Google "speaker grille cloth" and you should find several sources. I don't know if anyone sells the exact color and weave for Polks. Good listening.........mine are playing right now............George Jones and this afternoon I may pay a few classical overtures:cool:

If you're really FAST.....the best way to do the grilles is to saturate a small area with Rug Dr. upholstery cleaner solution and IMMEDIATELY extract it with a wet vacuum. Prop in front a fan to dry out completely. Most silver dome tweeters sound like tin, IMO.

Thanks for the cleaning grill advice.

I'm a little new and the tech end of things. Which tweeters do you have? These SL 2000's don't sound that bad in these Monitor 10's.

I have a pair of monitor 7s with the 2000 tweeter and it doesn't sound bad to me. Just listen to them for several weeks.....then if you hear something you don't like come back and tell us. On CP not liking the 2000 tweeter is almost required:biggrin:
You can replace the tweeters with the RDO194 available from Polk for a little over $100 shipped.

    Thanks Don,
All I have is a JVC RX-515 Receiver and a JVC QL-A2 Quartzlock Turntable. Like to spin my old vinyl. Listening to some Johnny Cash. Sure sounds good with my 10's.

I own the SL2000's and have heard the Peerless in the 10's. The Peerless is a big improvement over the 2000 IMO. I'll do the crossovers before I upgrade to the RDO's though.

I have a few Peerless tweeters but they aren't replacements for the 2000s. They will replace the 1000s with just a very light touch with a Dremel on the opening. My 10s have the 2500 which everyone thinks should be replaced by the RDO 198. I'll do the x overs on the 10s and I may go with the crowd and put the RDO 198s in.
I was thinking just minutes ago that I need to put some JC on. He's on one of my Merle Haggard discs........they do "Im Leaving Now" Some really nice flat top picking on that one then Merle sings "My Runaway Mama"
Bed time for this old guy now.:smile::smile:

I was also wondering about cleaning cloth grills and had an idea of taking them to a dry cleaner to have them gently shot and dried. Again I never heard of this being even attemted so don't blame me if you try and you get a shrunken wrinkled grill....LW
