cl has a mint set of the mgIIbs, the guy said he hooked them up for the first time in 6 or so years, one sounds perfect, the other as if the treble has been turned down a bit.
Have read a few articles on maggies, I realize you can get into a lot of repairs, some much more involved than others.
It would be about a 2 hour ride, or else i would be there now.
Any advice in general, or in particular about the lowered treble would be greatly appreciated.

Check with Magnepan before you buy them. I think they sells the replacement tweeter or repair kits but you need to be able fix it yourself.
If you have to send them in to Maggie for repair, figure the cost of parts and repair plus shipping and risk of damage too.
But all in all, $200 doesn't seem a bad price for a pair of mgIIbs.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -
I believe considering the drive, 200 bucks, unknown problem and age of speakers i will probably pass.
I have also heard they are not the speaker for someone who likes to rock, and that is a large part of our catalog.
I have some unmodified sda 2bs, how would anyone rate the maggies and sdas 1 to 10, not head to head ,but quality.humpty dumpty was pushed -
Call Magnepan direct. You can grab a set of MMG's for 599 plus a nominal shipping charge. These are the best sounding speaker for the price I have ever heard. The Gear... looked at the ad for mmgs.
Dont have money, disabled on a fixed income, a few things around the house need to be done, and i am seriously thinking of calling them with a credit card no.
I have never even been able to hear speakers of this type, but i love the open airy type speakers.
Please, anyone tell me their experiences with speakers such as these.humpty dumpty was pushed -
put simply, they have replaced my big SDA's as my main speaker in my two channel setup. They are a very good speaker, but many prefer running them with a sub. I love mine just the way they are.The Gear... I recently refurbished two pairs of Magnepan SMGa's. They were actually born a day apart so the sound is identical as far as I can tell.
Just messing around one day I stacked them. I was skeptical because boredom set in once before and I stacked my LSi9's with awful results.
With the Maggies stacked, you basically have about a 7 foot tweeter and a seven foot mid/bass driver on either side. Its the same driver arrangement only taller.
Once stacked, they are about eight feet tall. I hooked all four up to my Parasound HCA 2200ii and an old Nakamichi CA5 I bought from H9 and crossed my fingers before I fired them up.
The size of the soundstage was insane. The bass response was way better and imaging was not negatively affected at all. I was hearing things on very familiar tracks that I hadn't heard before and found myself playing songs I haven't heard in a long time as they actually sounded "fresh" with this setup. I added a sub and many hours later I was fighting off sleep because I wanted to hear everything in my catalog on them.
I spent around $400.00 for all four speakers and did the Peter Gunn refurb and also did the full razor treatment following online directions (pm me if you have any questions). It was fun!
I love the Maggie sound and especially the BIG Maggies.
If you have alot of time on your hands, try to find some old ones (mine were made in Aug. 1988) and fix 'em up. They (the smaller ones) are inexpensive and easy to work on and I am happy as hell with mine.
