I have a colleague that is coming over to listen to a few tunes and a BBQ and has said that his all time favorite song is Mack The Knife sung by Bobby Darin. Anyway, I went to Walmart today and found a Bobby Darin CD- "Dream Lover" that had a version of Mack The Knife- Digitally Remastered. Not bad, but I would really like a copy of a good recording of that song. Anyone know of a better CD of this song.

Thanks, really appreciate the feedback for my friend.
Michael ;)

Look for it on any of the Time-Life series. You can usually pick those up pretty cheap on Amazon. I have several of their CD's from various collections and I have never been disappointed. Cheers.

Correction, the one I have is from the Billboard Collection 1959, also excellent. These are really cheap over on Amazon.

The Bobby Darin Story on Atco. This is the best version of MtK and Beyond the Sea I can find. Unfortunately there is narration by Bobby as an intro to MtK.

You get some GREAT songs on this cd. Clementine and Artificial Flowers are stand-outs. They would've been hits if released as singles.

    Big Darin fan here.

Mack the Knife comes in a lot of flavors. Louis has a good one, and Ella forgets the lyrics live in Berlin. I like Darin's version, but I have a version by Lotte Lenya (she's mentioned in the lyrics), whose husband Kurt Weill WROTE THE SONG FOR. She sings in German. It is sublime.

    I have this album:
    http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Bobby-Darin/dp/B000002LV4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1303567095&sr=8-1

    But mine has this cover:

I got it in a second hand store in Vermont, I want to say 2006 or so, when I was visiting my sister. It has this version of "Mack the Knife":

    <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SEllHMWkXEU&quot; frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

But I really got it because they were playing this song on the in-store stereo:

I was so ecstatic to hear it because a few years earlier, "Finding Nemo" came out as well as Kevin Spacey's "Beyond The Sea" movie about Bobby Darrin and for some reason everybody kept playing the Kevin Spacey sung sound track to "Beyond The Sea" and/or Robbie Williams' version from the "Finding Nemo" soundtrack. It was annoying at best. But apparently, most of his good stuff is from the "Atlantic years", which apparently still owns most of the publication rights on Bobby Darrin stuff. Looks like Warner Music Group who owns Atlantic, re-released the album in 2004 to cash in on the Bobby Darrin craze. So if you can't find the Atco album George mentioned, that Warner album is a good alternative. I'd look for the 2004 version, it's probably going to be a higher quality disc but the 1990 version gets good quality reviews as well. Mine is stamped 1990 and I like it just fine.

I'm not a big Darin fan but "Beyond the Sea" really swings!

    Great groove too.
