Question to a few DIY speakers builder among polkies.

Is CSD fact or fiction?

I am a CSD believer though. The measurement may be somewhat flawed but better than FR plots to decide the driver performance.

Fact. While a speaker and/or speaker system may have a frequency response that's flat as a pancake (and thus highly marketable to the public), the real story is not told about it's transient response and what people perceive as "tightness" and "cleanliness" in the bass until the effects of it's decay results are borne out.

There is an excellent chapter dedicated to this in "Loudspeakers For Music Recording and Reproduction" by Newell and Holland. A great read.

    Geoff,

Thanks for the suggestion on a good book. I've ordered one through Amazon since it has excellent reviews.

CSD provides better data set of the driver responses than just a simple FR plot. I am looking into lots of drivers and many doesn't come with CSD plots yet. I hope it'll change one day.

    Cheers,
    James

Good luck with that. I wish more came with distortion plots too.

Fact,it will show delayed resonances (ringing) since it's looking at the time domain.

Zaph usully does a CSD plot as part his driver measurement routine, though he only has a sampling of the popular drivers.http://www.zaphaudio.com/5.5test/compare.html
