Are my speakers obsolete

Hi, This is the first time I have ever posted on a forum, so forgive me if this post is incorrect or weird.

I just bought a new receiver (pioneer vsx 1020), and I hooked them up to my old Polk RM 2300SAT speakers. I think it sounds fine, but have no idea if I'm missing out on a much better sound. My question is, does anyone know if my Polk RM2300SAT speakers are obsolete, or would investing about $500 for new speakers only give me a mariginal difference in sound quality?
(I also currently own a PSW 120 Polk subwoofer, and XBox 360, PS3, and a sony 200 disc DVD player, with a 46 inch 1080p HD TV with digital cable).

Thank you!

Speakers don't become obsolete. Perfectly sane people pay exhorbitant sums of money for Western Electric, RCA, JBL, and Altec loudspeakers made before the outbreak of World War II... and it's not just because they look cool.

The drivers in my living room loudspeakers were manufactured, by Altec, in the early 1960s.

Now, I cannot judge whether there might be other speakers you'll like better than what you have - or even if there are speakers that'll mate better with the Pioneer... but that doesn't make your speakers obsolete.

For about $500 you could order some monitor 60's, a cs2, and some monitor 30 surrounds from newegg.com and I bet the improvement would be night and day!

Obsolete? No. Could you better? Always. Should you upgrade? Very subjective and personal question. My opinion? If you have the money and want to experience all that blu-ray (as well as hdtv and dvd) has to offer, I would use the $500 to buy a good used pair of bookshelf speakers like the rti A1 or even older like the rt25i, and then buy a nicer sub like the polk psw505 (comes up on newegg regularly for around 200 shipped). You will notice a HUGE difference. But again, that's not to say that what you have is obsolete. They are quality speakers and I am sure very enjoyable.

Final words: warning, if you purchase new speakers upgraditis may be in your imminent future!
    Peace,

And you could move your present sats to surround duty and use the sub to shore up the surrounds. The results would be most excellent!

As mentioned, speakers are never obsolete. Speaker technology has been the same for decade, the output is still analogue. As pointed out, you can upgrade. Upgrading is a personal choice. Factors which should help YOU make a sound decision as if upgrading is for you; How big is your room? How efficient the speakers are in your room? How please are you with your present system? Will replacing your speakers lead you to replace any other piece of equipment such as your receiver/AVR? If so, do you have any desire and have the budget to invest in that route? So many more questions that only you can answer. The "What I would do if I were you..." comment shouldn't fly as nobody is you and only you know your personal requirements, desire, taste, budget and choices. Do you like and enjoy what you presently own? If so, spend your money elsewhere! If there anything you are not happy with your present system, state exactly what dis-please you and what changes you would like to see. From there, you can get sound help for your specific needs. Telling you to buy X or X speakers simply because you have ****$ available is wrong! What exactly are the changes you would like to see in your HT/Gaming room (be audio or visual)?
