Apparently, it doesn't use the gps to do so... I wonder what the point of this is.

So they can sell you stuff. If iTunes knows where you've been and knows that you are a huge Lady Gaga FameMonster they can advertise to you about tickets for her concert coming soon to an arena near you!!! I'm not sure if they do that yet, but basically it's a matter of time.

Most smartphones are tracking your location continuously. HTML5 has much enhanced facilities for asking the user's browser where the device it's running on is located physically. Both Webkit (the browser core that Android phones use) and iOS Safari are happy to reply back when they are asked for this information from what I've seen. I haven't looked for a way to turn this off on my HTC... I'd imagine there is one, but not sure how easy it would be to find.

The funny thing is, as far as they know, this information is not transmitted back to Apple (yet?) but it's kept on your machine.

Btw, your mobile operator can get this same exact information (your location updates, via cell tower triangulation) without your consent or even you knowing that they're logging these coordinates at all.

I'm guessing the point of it is to see where the holes in service are, but who knows.

Sad part is google does something close to this. So I would not put it past any of the providers or smart phones to do it.

funny thing is, if the Police are going to use the information, that means it would also double as a bitchin alibi if you pull "shenanigans" and leave the phone home

As consumers, do we no longer have any say in what information can be collected on us? This type of information is absolutely private to our lives and yet we cannot control it at all. We should demand to be able to opt out of any and all types of data collection on ourselves.

What about Private Browsing? I know that both Firefox and IE support this, and probably other browsers, too. Websites can only collect info related to the current session, and can't correlate one session with another, without persistent cookies being saved. Of course, cookies can have their benefits, so it's a trade-off.

If you don't want to be tracked or advertised to, loose the free facebook, google bloatware, and free apps, and jump of the grid. Buy a 'phone', nothing more.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Will be interesting in the future when this info is used to convict someone of a crime. I'll bet ya though, you could not use the same info in your own defense.

it's got to b e a great alibi too.. I mean, think about it... just leave your phone somewhere... say you were at such and such place all day... they be like "yeah right, I don't believe that s@#t" ... you insist.. .they steal your phone, and you protest "you can't do that!" .... fat cop is thinking "I got you good now you *#*$$#" .... then they look at the phone and find you were where you said you were...

there not going to be actually looking through your phone. They will get subpoenas and search warrants to get the tower information.

True you can leave your phone at home.

Believe me, nobody does when they do illegal things.

Bottom line, just do the right thing and keep your phone with you all the time. :)

do the cell phone companies actually keep information like that? I'd imagine that they could, but there would really be no reason for it... it would just be a waste of space on their servers... imagine all the calls that go through each day, triangulating and saving everyone's location?

Sounds like the same reason they can't generally get records of what sites you've visited from the provider... because, even though they can log that information, there would be too much, and it would serve no purpose for them to do so. maybe this is more true with websites than calls, but same concept.

    They just save tower information.

You feed the information into software like Trips and Maps and it gives you the path the person was driving, walking, etc.

Yes and no, android phones send info to google not the phone companies however to my knowledge they keep your emails, texts, and phone calls made and received.

    Depends on the cell provider.

Some texts can only be seen within the actual phone itself.
