Side positions

Should I place the side surrounds in front of the listening position or behind the listening position? I have 7.1 w/ 2 rear surrounds. Currently, I have the side surrounds about 1.5ft in front of and 4ft to the side of the listening position. My rear surrounds are 4ft behind and 3ft to the left and right of the listening position. Any thoughts? I'd like to know where other people have their speakers set up w/ 7.1. Thanks!
Receiver = Denon AVR-3803

    WWW.Dolby.Com has some really great info on placement. I think you'll find that 2-3' above ear level, and slightly behind the primary listening position will give you great results.

    If I put my side surround slightly behind the listening position then my rear and sides will be about 1.5 ft apart. Is that too close? That doesn't seem like it would give a nice even sound field.

    Well trying to get perfect placement can be a real chore and is rarely achieved. How far apart are the rear speakers from each other? Any chance you can move them a little closer together?

    They are about 8 ft. apart. There is a double door that opens to a balcony so I can't put them any closer together and still be able to open the doors

    Hmmmm, tough choice! how about using a couple of step ladders as temporary stand and try them directly to the side of your listening position, and then slightly behind. Make sure you calibrate each time you move them and reset the speaker distances via your receiver if you have that option.

    BTW Are you using direct radiating speakers on the sides or Bi-pole/Di-pole speakers?

    I am using Fxi50's as sides. They are on speaker stands that place them at ear level. My rears are Rti38's on the same type of speaker stands. The rest on my set-up: Front = Rti70's (biwired)
    Center = Csi40 (biwired), Denon 2803, and a Sony 12" sub.
    The Fxi50's are set to Bipole.
    Receiver = Denon AVR-3803
    DVD = Denon DV-2900
    Fronts = SDA SRS 2.3TL's

    Piece of cake! since they are already on stands, move 'em around, re-calibrate after each move and listen. find the spot that suits your tastes and leave them there!
