I'm auditioning for a band on Sunday

I never in a million years thought I would be auditioning for a band. My friend called me last week telling me that he has some friends in a band that need a drummer and he thought I could do the job. It's hand drums, so I'd be playing a djembe. I talked to the band leader yesterday and decided to meet them and have a jam session on Sunday. They play World/Tribal/Trance music like Kaya project and Dead can Dance type stuff. I've been playing djembe for about 13 years and didgeridoo for 10 years. They haven't made any cd's and don't even have a name yet, so they are mostly in it for fun, but they would like to practice and start doing gigs soon.
I'm nervous and excited about this opportunity. I'm not sure we will be a good fit, but no matter what happens, I know I'll have a good time because I love playing.
Anybody else play in a band?

Good luck!!
I play guitar(both acoustic and electric), and I've played in numerous bands over the years...and it's always been about the fun...and nothing more. I've played tons of gigs...but never anything that really paid a whole hell of a lot. These days I'm not really in a band, though there are a few other guitarists that I jam around with some. For the most part these days, I'm just focusing on playing acoustic and singing solo. I have a lot of fun getting in front of a bunch of people by myself and jamming out. I'm that guy that has his guitar at every campfire of the summer, and entertains everyone for the whole night(not to toot my own horn ).The nirvana inducer-

My music career began young - I was in a band in high school called 'The Beatless'. We used the slogan - just like The Beatles with something even more - an extra 'S'. We were possibly the worst band ever. We played mostly Beatles covers and originals - the main song writer was one of those depressing, my life is in the crapper type guys - so we had all these depressing songs, and then we'd play Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da...it just didn't make sense
Our crowning achievement was playing at a friends party, and we played, "Oh Darling" and my friend did the screamiest rendition, ended up on the ground rolling around. I'm glad I only played the piano for the band.
We had shirts - they were pretty cool

Good luck with the audition. My son John (almost 16 years old) is an up and coming metal drummer. He plays in the school jazz band which I think is great to give him a good foundation. He's the best drummer in the high school now (grades 8 to 12) and I'm not just saying that because he's my son. He's got real talent. And it all started with the video game Rockband. Not all video games are bad. Again good luck and have fun with the audition.

Thanks for all the well wishes gents!
I'll keep you posted about how it goes. -
You've played the didgeridoo for 10 years ? IMO that spells, "You're in".
If all musical instruments on the planet were to disapear with the exception of the didgeridoo, mankind would survive and thrive. That's no bs.
To keep from a major rant and rave, I'll just leave you with a "Good Luck", Ern Dog.Sal Palooza -
Thanks!
There is also the part about being the "right fit" with the band that is a factor too. Since I don't know any of the band members and never heard them play, I'm kinda going in blind.
Sounds like you're a pretty big Didg fan- do you play too or just like how it sounds? -
How very cool. Drums no less. Sounds tribal. Hoqw about making a recording and posting it so we all can hear what you are into. Break a leg!

Good luck with the audition slay em' with the Mick Fleetwood look.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Don't play; it's the sound and the aboriginal people behind the didgeridoo.
The sound; gawwd, the sound.
Pure magic.
When done properly, though. There are videos out there, btw, of ...... hip-hop-didgeridoo. :frown: And that just isn't right.
Good luck again, and be sure to let us know how your audiition turns out.Sal Palooza -
Good luck with the auditionengtaz

Well there were 6 other band members: 2 flutes, bass guitar- amped, electric guitar & 2 female vocalists, who also double with percussion. The flutes and vocalists had their own mic. We played 6 songs then ate a potluck dinner, then 4 more songs after dinner. At the end they asked me if I wanted to come back next week and I said YES!
I could already tell that doing this is going to make me stretch and grow ie. stronger drum solos, keeping the rhythm, learning new rhythms, etc. They liked my didgeridoo playing and it seemed to fit some songs nicely.
It was my first time meeting the band, so it was too soon for me to bust out with recording equipment, but I could see doing that in the future.
What a fun adventure this is going to be.... -
Congrats on the great audition and acceptance!!! Sounds like a lot of fun.SDA-1C (full mods)
