Polkdirect has a stock of RTi12s available. They are coming in at $800 delivered. $300 cheaper than the similar RTiA9.

Its a stupid question I know, but, is this an unbeatable deal!? I'm feeling pretty strongly that its not going to get much better than this for a comparable speaker.

I know these may have a different crossover, but do they use the same drivers as the RTiA9?

I pondered this when I bought my RTi12s recently for $600 whether stepping up to the RTiA9s was worth the extra 5-600, but I couldn't justify it. Interestingly as well, I was looking at the auction and polk has this on there:

"The newly designed, RTi A9, is the cosmetically upgraded version of the RTi12. Performance of both the RTi A9 and RTi12 is identical."

It shares the same FR and power handling capability. They sound similar, but if you can't hear the difference, then you're not listening. Cabinet design definitely comes into play, even if the BOM for the speakers is exactly the same.

Depends on what that extra $300 means to you.

IMO, that $300 (37% more expensive) can be spent in other areas in your system that will have a more meaningful impact in sound quality. ie, if you're in the market for a sub, adding $300 to your budget ($500 vs $800 sub) goes a very long way.

    This...

Only your ears and your wallet can decide if the improvement is worth the extra coin. For mine, the answer is RTi A9 all day and twice on Sunday.

Is the internal cabinet construction different? Are the upper midranges isolated from the other woofers on the RTi12?

The internal construction is drastically different and has two sealed internal chambers.

You can always criticize a speaker. Too me, the A series reduces the criticisms of the RTi4,6,8,10, 12 series to hair splitting. They sound similar, but if the RTi were good to very good, then the A series is very good to excellent (at their pricepoint).

Man, no way I could get the 12s after that. I'd be itching to upgrade as soon as I plugged them in...

I never commented on whether the RTi12s compare to the RTiA9s, I only re-stated what Polk, themselves, put on their auction.

There's a drastic difference in internal construction between the RTi12 and RTiA9? What is it? I thought they each had sealed internal chambers.

Seriously? Just look at the cabinets from above let alone from inside.

So you're just talking about the curvature of the cabinets? That much is obvious.

Even if they were to sound the same, if you're going to put that much speaker in your home, they better look good.

The A9's look damn good. The 12's, not so much...

They are a full on piece of furniture, spend the extra $300 and get better sound and FAR better looks.
