Adjustment Knob

I'm using an 880 amp that came with the gain adjustment knob. The knob is either on or off. There's no gradual adjustment at all.

The manual is very vague, so can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I have the gain all the way up so I can adjust it down with the knob -- is this correct?
