no sound with netflix of with cd

I have my soundbar 6000 with a Sharp flatscreen TV, Verizon cable box and Sony PS3.
I get sound through the Polk with DVDs and TV but not with any music cds or instant viewing DVDs on Netflix.
I set up the HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and I get sound but from the TV to the soundbar using a digital/audio cable I get no sound.
What am I doing wrong???
I would appreciate any help.

    Try going into the PS3 menu and change the output type in the "Sound" options. It appears as though it's currently set up for HDMI. Try changing the output to digital/optical.

    Hopefully this will solve the problem.
