I'm going to start recapping one pair of speakers. Which one would you suggest I do? I'm able to use Sonicaps and Mills resistors. I'm planning to do them all but at my age I don't even buy green bananas and I want to hear the result in at least one of these:biggrin: Thanks.

Which one do you like the sound of best now? That is the one I would start with.

I like the Model 7 best now but I remember (or think I remember) how great the 10s sounded 20 years ago. I have a beautiful pair of 7s with real wood oak veneer with the short grille and those are the ones I'm leaning toward. If I'm around long enough I'll eventually do all three.

I bought my 10s because years ago a friend of mine had a pair of 7s that I remembered as sounding really good. I would have bought a pair of 7s if I had came across a pair of them first. I think my 10s sound great and have no regrets about getting them instead of a pair of 7s. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

I would also start with the one I like the best. IMHO back when I had Monitors I liked the 7's the most. Just a great all around speaker.

    1st 7's
    2nd 10's
    3rd 5's

Don- I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say I'd do the pair with the least appealing sound 1st. This way you may get the greatest improvement which may push you towards doing the other pairs sooner. Also if for some reason you have any issues and hurt the speakers while attempting the repair you have not hurt the speakers you enjoy the most for now. That is kinda my feeling towards my own. I now have 2 pairs of 10's and will have a 2nd pair of 7's later in the week. I'm probably going to sell my good pair of 10's for $ to work on the others and still have enough working speakers to have a set for HT, 2ch as well as one under the knife so to speak. Best of luck and as always take pics so we can all see and learn.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Since I'm sending them out to a CP member I may as well send the 7s and 10s.:cool::cool: The oak model 7s have the 1000 tweeter. I have a complete set of drivers and x over for a model 7 that used the Peerless tweeter and I'm thinking that maybe the Peerless may be a slightly better tweeter than the 1000 but I'm not sure. Is the Peerless a silk or metal tweeter?
The 10s have the 2500 tweeter and I may replace it with the RDO replacement.

All this thinking gives me a headache! Might try just a tot of Makers Mark. Just a tot though....too much and Bose start sounding good.

Sounds like a plan. Why not, right? I hope the guys local or I feel for you and shipping... in the last 2 months I've had 2 pair of 7's shipped from MN and MI to TN not cheap.

I'll just be shipping the X Overs. The 7s would cost about $40+ each to package and ship! The 10s cost about $100 each. I can easily remove and replace the x overs but I'm not very good at soldering. The CP member I'm sending them to is highly skilled at everything Polk.

You're right of course for xo upgrade only ship xo's :). Guess my wallet was still hurting from shipping the whole speakers which affects my brain. I do love my vintage polk's though. Could you PM with who's doing the work for you in case I decide to chicken out of doing them myself. Actually I'm going to do a pair of 7's myself and if I screw it up then I'll need someone else.

I know what you mean about high shipping cost. When I bought my 10s I paid almost as much for shipping as I did for the speakers. Ain't it odd that now that I have mine there have been quite a few pairs within a short driving distance that have shown up. For six months before that there were none. Just my luck...

I paid exactly as much for my 10s as I did to have them shipped here. Back in the late 80s I paid $550 for a pair with real wood light oak veneer and sold them for $150.:mad:
I've never been lucky enough to find them in Goodwill for $10 or in a dumpster. Must not be living just right.
