There are several freebies, the best of which is ToneAudio. I'm proud to say that I'm a junior staff member. My old publication, Affordable$$Audio has merged with HiFizine, the articles are still freely available, though no longer in a downloadable pdf. Overall, there are at couple of dozen free audio review sites, you can see the complete list at Daily Audiophile.

I used to read Affordable Audio every month. The front page now says they have merged with HiFi Zine, but the link on the page takes you to the apple story.

All the old archives are still available there. Some good reading there. Can't give an opinion about HiFi Zine.

Affordable Audio is great. Lots of great reviews. I especially like modern reviews of vintage/near-vintage gear. Always nice to see contemporary reviews of older gear for a perspective relative to modern equipment. Really enjoy it! And the full back catalog is available online. A+!

I liked Affordable Audio quite a bit until it turned into nonstop advertisments but the merger with Hi-Fizine looks ok so far. There's a handful of DIY and low-budget pubs worth taking a look at, just check the list that Mark posted and filter out what is ridiculous.

As far as regular reading, I'd pick Tone Audio.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
