Sony VAIO Laptop Problem

Does anyone have a spare copy of Windows7 that I can borrow to troubleshoot my VAIO problem? It came with the OS installed, no disc, and at this point, I think a fresh install is the next step.

I'd like to just get it up and running on the internet again before I buy my own version for the whole house. I'll return it as shipped and include a couple Polk goodies for your time and effort.

I can't begin to go thru what I've done to try and get the internet working again but it's down hard on both wireless and wired connections.

Anyone?

Rick - I have no idea...can anyone verify that I could use that for my idea? Thanks Rick, it's very nice of you to offer and we'll see what the general consensus is.

Assimilated? Anyone else that plays with computers?

See if these work for you to burn your own copy. There is no license of course, but I assume you have that.

Rick, if yours is a dell one, it probably won't work. Dell uses bios activation, so it won't be able to ask for a serial, and likely won't even allow an install.

I can provide you with the proper disc if you would like, or a download location so you can make your own disc. There is nothing illegal in this, as you will be using your own product id for activation.

edit: looks like phantom beat me. Downloading a disc will be your fastest/best option.

On a side note, manufacturers preactivate their computers. Your computer is probably activated for every retail OS that was made before your computer was produced, and was supported by the manufacturer at the time (that supports this type of activation, obviously).

For example, my Dell E6510 is activated for Visa Basic through Ultimate and 7 Starter to Ultimate. Popping in the correct OEM disc results in activation, regardless to whether or not your computer came with it.

edit: another interesting note, many manufacturers will provide OEM discs upon verification of your (or I should say 'a') serial number.... sometimes they charge a small fee.

Dragon & Coke - Thanks! I'm trying this out now and will burn it to disc afterwards. I'll let you know how it turns out. Hopefully it works so my wife will get happy again.

I just downloaded the linked program to my home computer, zipped it onto my portable drive and launched the Autorun on my laptop from the portable....problem solved. I'm getting all my updates and going to hit my usual virus programs next.

Thanks Rick for the offer of sending the disc and Dragon and Coke for the offline suggestion, which subsequently worked just fine.

If you guys PM me your mailing address, I'll send you a nick nack just for helping as you have no idea of the crisis mode of my wife. It could be an autographed picture of Russman, used notebook or pencil....you just never know.

    Thanks again.

My fiance's sister-in-law was here for a visit the other day and decided to use my fiance's year old VAIO. Long story short, she crashed the hard drive. Luckily I had made the recovery discs when I bought her the laptop and all is ok now.
