A 7.4 just hit the northern area of Japan. Tsunami warnings issued. Dayum.

It just happened 15 mins ago, I don't have a link yet other than the fact that the USGS has the quake listed.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

CNN has it up on their site as a "Breaking News" headline but no info besides for it being 7.4.

My eyes and ears have been glued to CNN as I prepare for this afternoon's classes. Let's hope for the best here! It is a real tragedy that needs to have an 'ending'!

I spent a couple of weeks in Japan while I was in China last year and this adds to the horror when I see pictures of devastation and destruction in areas that I was very close to in better times.

They are still issuing warnings? All the news outlets are saying the warnings have been lifted.

I wonder when earthquakes stop being "aftershocks"... The news story I read was calling this an aftershock of the large quake last month. Seems that it's really an earthquake in its own right...
    Ludicrous gibs!

From my very limited understanding, an earthquake breaks an area of the earth's crust, but usually doesn't make a clean break. Aftershocks are the effect of the parts of the crust that are still somewhat attached, breaking off.

So I'd imagine the difference would be when a new fault is broken instead of just 'finishing' the break from a prior earthquake.

I could be way off...and my terminology is probably wrong as well though.

"Japan earthquake today: Tsunami warning lifted, but Fukushima evacuated

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook northeast Japan late Thursday. A tsunami warning was issued, then lifted for the coast, already devastated by last month's massive quake and the tsunami that crippled the Fukushima nuclear power plant."

Even if that were true (I don't believe it is but I don't know for sure) geologists would not know which of these types of events had occurred until they studied things, and these events are declared almost instantly.

Just some backround, I worked for Fred Alger Management, my office was on the 93rd floor of the trade center. I was in my office on Monday Sept 10th, 2001, and flew home to Califorinia that afternoon( my office was in NYC but I worked in California). By the end of the next day my boss and ALL of my co-workers were dead.
