I'd take the Retail prices of each component and add them up. If you're going with something like Renters or Homeowners policies, they should give you full replacement value for a new item, not what they can find them for used.........in a yard sale.

The biggest thing my dearest Henry, is *proof* that you owned what you insured. To throw out a number, lets say $100,000 worth of furniture, clothes, electonics...doesn't mean if your house burns down that you automatically GET 100 grand.

They make healthy allowances on clothes, cookware, regular items, but make a videotape, or snap digital pictures of anything else that holds value, then store it off-site, at a neighbor's house, your work, etc.

I have owners manual, pictures AND video of just about everything I own, stored my mom's humble abode.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Do as Russ said, but put it in a lockbox at the bank...Mom's house can burn just as easy as yours.

I echo Russ's comments, get pictures!
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

My sister in law tried to con the insurance company when his house mysteriously caught fire. He tried to con the insurance company to get a bunch of money from them, needless to say it didn't work. Pictures are worth a thousand words, and maybe even a few thousand dollars!

    Another supporter of Russ's comments.
We go through the whole house and videotape everything every year, things change. I mean everything - closets, dresser drawers, even the garage. Do you know that you've probably got $100 worth of stuff in the kitchen gadget drawer? I even went to the trouble of videoing the serial numbers of all my electronics. It's something you hope the hell you never have to use, but you've got it just in case. Oh yeah, and if you can, scan the reciepts of your electronics, burn them on a CD and keep it in the bank safe deposit box along with your video tape and pics.
