Crank a speaker up on an underwhelmingly powered AVR...not likely that it's going to be a problem. (besides sounding crappy due to high levels of distortion) Crank a speaker up on an overwhelming supply of power with a speaker that can't handle the amount of power you are giving it, and you'll get a blown speaker.

Nope. It's the high level of distortion (clipping) from an under powered amp/AVR that will cause damage to the speaker.

Apparently I need to clarify. To quote Whoaru99 from a forum at AudioKarma:

"Also, clipping isn't an immediate death sentence. It still has to generate enough extra power to thermal out the driver. For instance, you could drive a 10W amp to clipping all day long and it's probably not going to damage a driver rated for 50W continuous power because worst case the 10W amp will only deliver 20W at maximum clipping (3dB difference between peak to average ratio of sine wave vs square wave worst case)"

And we all know that with all channels driven the AVR wattage ratings are quite bloated. So when you're dealing with a Sony AVR listed for 110 watts, it's probably more like 50 watts.

Too much power = too much heat dispersion. Energy (vibration) = heat. And if it is above the rated levels for too long you can destroy your speakers. And regarding the low power doing damage, if you read my whole post you'll see that I state that if the low power supplied is 3x lower (give or take) the peaks caused by that distortion (clipping) will not bring that speaker into a dangerous level.

Simply said I think that everyone throws around the low power statement without really explaining what it comes from and in what situations someone needs to be concerned.

So, how about you drive that lower powered amp into clipping and see how long your tweeters last.

Well fellows.... I spent the good part of this afternoon setting my new SC 35 up and needless to say I am impressed. Had the volume to -5 on one of my favorite Dire Strait songs... Sultans of Swing - the separation is crazy good, clarity exceptional. I Bi Amped the front Monitor 60's. Both front and back 40's held there own, PSW 125 needed a little fine tuning, it started humming across the hard wood floor at one point during Pink Floyd's "Money". Went through a few of my favorites list in particular the voice of Allison Krause has never sounded so good. I thought she was here in the room. My wife and daughter were totally impressed. It's going to take at least a month of Sundays to delve deep into all the different codecs/DSP etc. ICE is very nice......

Welcome and again enjoy. If you decide to try external amplification, try IceAmps. They too perform very well. I have a D-Sonic 1000S on my fronts and it is fantastic.

Thanks Grimster, Nice... I almost pulled the trigger on the 37... - I bought the 35 on Ebay at about 40 percent off MSRP, from a reputable dealer with great sell reviews - and then added a Square Trade, 3 year warranty at time of purchase.

Wasn't looking for an argument or putting out a challenge F1nut.

My original purpose in saying anything was to caution the OP against over driving and damaging his speakers. Everyone always says there is nothing to worry about in using more power and I'm just trying to be helpful.

This forum is not about low power/high power it's about his new SC-35, let's just drop this and be happy for the OP's new receiver which is undoubtedly a great AVR!

Speaking of which what are your first impressions WGDB?

Congrats, I know yoou would love the SC-35 just like I do.

Did you do the auto cal with the mic yet?

What are you speakers set to? (Large, Small)

What's your EQ set? Freq levels

(Here is why, the SC-35 MCACC can sometime send too much bass to the center channel if it's considered a LARGE speaker.)

If you use iPods or an iPhone like I do, you need to turn off the Sound Retriever. Do this ONLY if you use Apple Lossless Tracks.

Full Auto Cal with the mic (Small) - I stream Apple Lossless files through both Squeezebox Touch and Apple TV.... I need to read the manual to find the the Sound Retriever. Haven't tried the Iphone connection yet.

Monitor 60's should be set to LARGE because they can play lower frequencies. Go in and manually change that in the program.

Sound Retriver can be turned off from the Audio Parameter button on your remote.
