Most people don't want to go mucking around in the guts of their laptops. My wife has a 1318 with a touchpad key that doesn't work anymore. It's out of warranty so I had to buy a new palmrest on the used market (since Dell gouges the hell out of you for parts if you aren't still under warranty) and I'm sure replacing it will be a pain. I've had bad luck with another Dell lappy and a desktop (bad mobo as you said). Except for a video card that's gone bad here or there on me every other PC/Lappy I've every owned has chugged through four or five years of service with no issues. No more Dell for me, neither.
Dell offers next business day ON SITE technicians under my warranty... I accidentally had one come to my house the first time (before I figured out I could order parts)... they replaced the stuff in an hour... and scratched the crap out of my laptop in the process.
