S-Video Connector Pin Busted Off!

Hey Gang,

On my spare DVD player in my bedroom, I accidentally broke off one of the pins from the S-Video cable that connected to it, so now the pin is embedded inside the socket to which the cable connects. Is there any easy way to remove the pin from the "socket" that will allow me to insert a new S-Video connector? Ideas anyone?

It'd be nice if I could just insert a new connector and the embedded pin would just be pushed out to the other side (inside the player), but I just don't think it works that way!

Try a sewing needle, try to work it out if you can get at it. If it is sticking out, needle nose tweezers (or jewlers tweezers it is referred to I guess). My 2 cents...hope they work out for you...

Thanks for the suggestions! It's way in there so the needle idea may work - I'll give it a try. And yep, it's already unplugged!

No luck - that pin is REALLY in there! I can't believe there isn't a quick fix for when this happens, like a replacement part from an electronics store or something. I'm sure I'm not the only one this has happened to. If I can't fix it, I guess I'll have to resort to the coax video connection.

Try some gum the kind that is used on windows or even chewing gum or some window putty or even your kids silly putty that sould get it out.

    OMG.......PLEASE don't put gum in your S-Video slot......good lord.

If it's in there that tight, you're just gonna have to take it to a repair ship and have it fixed.......unless you think that you can open it up and replace the S-Video jack.

Make sure that you get a better quality S-Video cable too......Somethings wrong that the pin is breaking off, unless you've stomped all over the cable and jerked it all over the place while it's plugged in........

If it's not under warranty you're kinda screwed. You might be able to wiggle it out with a needle to the point that you can grab it with some needle-nose, but this will also loosen the connection.

If (and only IF) your DVD player is no longer under warranty, open it up. Once you find the offending connection and terminal, look at it. Romove the plug and look at it again. Female plugs have a hollow wrap that connects to the end of the wire. Sometimes this hollowness extends beyond the plastic housing. If this is the case you can push the pin out from the backside. You may have to bend the point where the female coupler extends past the housing. Do this very gently. If this breaks off inside you're bummin'. The end of a small allen wrench or blunted nail should work.

If you can't get to the backside of the pin, you may have to replace the whole S-video plug. This shouldn't be too hard and you can find replacements at Radio Shack or on the net.

Out of curiosity, let us know what cable you were using and an idea on what may have caused this.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

I guess that you didn't understand how to use gum I don't mean to stick the gum all the way into the S-video, but this is a fix if you can understand this "good God" man read.

This came from a repair center which uses silly putty for it won't stay in the socket. good Lord man.

"Gum has been used in many repairs not just in electronics, but I guess you did not know this "good lord"

It's an Acoustics Research S-Video cable, and I think I may have just pulled it out on an angle, thereby breaking the pin off. Thanks for all the suggestions so far - I'll see what happens.

Not that it would help you get the cable out, but AR has a lifetime warranty. If you call them, they should just send you a new cable, witout needing to send the broken one back.

    Good luck!

    kberg,

This has worked for RCA's. Use a sheet metal screw, one that is smaller at its tip than the diameter of the broken off pin. Hand thread it in until you feel it "catch", then pull with plyers.

S-vid... very small pin, but may be able to find a screw small enough.

    Good luck.

If you can't fix it, you may want to consider to get a cable with oneside is composite video plug and the other side is S-video, this cable converts composite signal to S-video signal (Radio shack has it). Also, some of the JVC switcher also converts composite signal to S-video signal...

Thanks! I didn't know this option was available. I'll check into it.

While getting an S-video to Composite adaptor IS an option...its not a "great" option. I hooked both connections up on my DVD player and AB'd then using my TV's input selector...its honestly true that the S-Video cable gives a much greater picture. Keep trying to get the pin out, one tiny sliver of metal shouldn't mean you need to lose video quality. Good luck man.

I haven't checked out to see if one exists for what you're needing, but there is an extraction tool that is an option for the pins of a male db9 or db25 cable. I would imagine that such thing exists that would apply to an S-Video cable as well.......might want to check with a repair shop to see if they have a tool to purchase from them..........
