As promised,,and in the flesh. The born on date of these puppies is 3-28-07,,thats 4 years in my book. After looking at Trey's mod thread,it got me thinking,so I pulled a driver and took a peek,,,hmmm,, Bennic electrolytics',,a Solen,,a Hovland in the tweeter circuit, with Eagle brand resistors in both sections.I thought to myself,,I should be able to do something here. After agonizing over which caps to use I settled on Clarity ESA series for the low/mid and the MR for the tweeter,,Mills resistors (12watt) replaced the 10 watt Eagles. The crossovers are PTP wired on a piece of particle board,,and the same for the tweeter circuit and glues to the interior walls of the cabinet.Removal was quite easy with a 3 inch putty knife/blade.Then a simple swap is all that it took for the crossover components. At this point,I might add that outboard crossovers did cross my mind,,but what the heck,,I'll just glue em' back in.Now,,they are in play,,how do they sound?,,,well,,the detail at low level is just simply amazing,,soundstage is wide and deep,,and the "tone" is just great.I always thought that the 7U's leaned on the bright side,, not anymore,,they are very "involving",,smooth and not bright by any stretch,,room filling to say the least.I'm burning them in at the moment,,and I gotta tell you that Shawn Mullins 9th Ward pickin parlor has never struck me,,until today,.There is so much "air" around the instruments,,involving,,indeed.I don't know how long the burn in is,,but so far,,I'm impressed.

Quicksilver GLA 40 watt tuber--I've got some treasures(6CA7's),that I have been waiting to put in her--but now I suppose that I'll let the caps burn in--what the heck--might as well pop the tubes in,,patience was never one of my better virtues.

I really want to make the upgrade to my 7u's! But I dont know where to start.. lol
Im not really familiar with the specifications of the crossovers. And I never messed with a soldering gun. Although I do have one. What type of glue did you use to put them back in? How long did it take to perform the operation????

Sorry for the basic questions but im inexperienced with crossovers. So far the extent of my audio hobby has been swapping gear, cables, and listening...

I knew nothing about them until I took a peek--it's really not that difficult--I hot glued the caps to the board, and the board to the inside of the cabinet. It took me abot 8-10 hours to complete the project--well worthwhile ,just my two cents.

    Man that is awesome!

I honestly think you would find an improvement going external - getting those parts away from those woofers.

    But thats just me! lol

That is great though - I am glad you like the results!

I really am enjoying my Super Towers and I have started on my other Taylo speaker too.

Just an update; did a little listening today, caps seem to burning in nicely-- the highs are just out of this world good,,organic with sparkle is the best way that i can describe it.The soundstage is wide and deep, but the instruments seem better placed/defined--and the vocals are --well to me they are cleaer, focused,,for example acoustic folk such as Baez,S Mullins,, puts them right there in the room,,sittin' on a chair and playin'the guitar,,,one thing did pop up,,and that was a banjo--damn,, I could hear his fingers move up and down the strings,,and actually hear them being picked--just sounded so real. All for now--enough of my babble.

Well,, how bout' an update-- still burning in,,the treble is amazing with the MR cap--stringed instruments are very very good. Much more "detail",,certainly no harshness an overall "cleaner" sound.. I'm gonna' move em' today and put more tube power to them with the Quicksilver M-80's,,should be innaresting.

Thanks for reminding me--I have to get the dimensioens to Jim--and yes--it is an entirely new speaker--much more open,,soundstage-instruments are well outside the speakers--much more defined/placement--and the highs are not edgy--they are clearer, but don't have the (what I call) anxiety/fatigue--more relaxed,,,hmmmm,,, sounds like I gave em' a Xanax---I really want to hear them with more tube power,,I'll do that tonight/tomorrow,, for some reason,I'm thinking solid state amp,,oh yeah--found a re-clocked--upgraded output caps Jolida in good condition for 525-- has blackgates--etc--should have it Mon--can't wait to try it with them.
