Just picked up this cool little unit, Yaqin ms-22b.riaa today. The tubes in it are 12ax7b "china". Anybody got any ideas of what to roll into this thing? Surely there must be something better out there than those.

You can spend time and money searching for whatever rare old ax7, just order a pair of Sovtek 12ax7lps and be done with it. You don't need $200 worth of tubes in a cheap phono stage. I'm interested in how that unit performs, be sure to post impressions / comparisons.

    Cheers

Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service.

I'll give those sovtek's a try. I wasn't planning on rolling in a $200.00 set of tubes, i didn't pay that much for it. I just figured there must be something better than the pedestrian/garden variety "china" tubes out there. I just got it and have not done much serious listening yet. It seems very well made on the outside, i will open it and have peek on the inside.

I'm running the Sovtek 12ax7's in a Pro-ject Tube Box SE phono pre, and they compared very favorably to a pair of RCA clear-top, side getter tubes from the '50's that tested at 65% life left. The Sovtek's are very quiet tubes with a very nice detail and depth.
