Should I fix or go new?

I have my Marantz DV7600 player at the shop right now and awaiting a phone call for the estimate. It seems to be overheating and starts skipping and then just jumping tracks all tegeather and then just stops playing.

If you let it sit for awhile, it will play again but now it's down to about 15-20minutes before it starts again...

So the questions is how much should I sink into fixing this player before I just think about getting something new?

I will not go used again, this player was used and lasted me about 8 months. At this time, I can't afford a brand new SACD player...

So I have been looking at the Marantz CD5004. Anyone else own it and can chime in?

I don't have a lot of SACD and most of them are hybrid anyway, so I can still listen to them. But would I take a big step back going to the CD5004 from the DV7600?

I had one that died too, I ended up junking it. IIRC, it has the same transport as the McIntosh MCD-201, which is known to be a problem child.

Do you remember what the transport cost was Face?

I really have zero idea what I should be expecting on this...

My thinking right now is that if it's over $100-$150 to fix, I will just get the CD5004 and enjoy my 3yr warranty.

I made a call to a local repair place for the parts and no one ever got back to me, so I never received a price.

I don't believe the 5004 would be a step back at all.

Spoke to the shop today, the pcik-up is bad and he also thinks that the micro-processor is also shot... :frown:

He gave a conservative estimate of $400 to fix it. Looks like I will be getting a new player.

You might want to try a search for a used HK DVD player (unsure of the CD players) - they are SACD compatible and should reasonably be had for under $100 for a good quality unit

The OP mentioned he wouldn't go to a used player this time since he had a bad experience with this player only lasting 68 months. My experiece fixing players leads me to believe that it is better of to buy new than used. The transport are so weak in those players, a few years of wear and tear and even with repairs, you do not know how long it will last.

A problem child? I think it was j..k! I had three of them in my rig before I gave up on it. They rushed that one and took a BIG hit on it as did all of us buyers.

About to go pick up my still broken DV7600 from the shop...

But I did order the CD5004 and I hope to have it sometime next week!

I plan to make the DV7600 my "project". I'm not going to give up on it yet, so I will take my time and see if I can't fix it and replace the parts myself.

The CD5004 was delivered today and I have been running it for a few hours now and so far I love it.

I have so far played Clapton's "Slow Hand" (Hybrid), Albert king's "Wednesday & Thursday Night in San Francisco" (Standard CD) and I'm now debating between Bob Seger's "Night Moves" or "Stranger in Town"...

Guess I could listen to both!

Nice warm tone from the CD5004, just as detailed as the DV7600 on standard CD playback, but I do miss the clarity and dynamics of my SACD stuff.

The DV7600 moved to the HT rig for now. Even though it's still "broken" it's been playing like a champ eversince I got it home from the shop.

I have about 5 hours on the DV7600 since it came home and not a single issue. Guess I will keep running it upstairs till it acts up again.
