Yamaha RX-v667

Hi All,

I am planning a setup with Monitor 70s for fronts, 50s forth back, CS2 and some subwoofer powered with RX-V667 from Yamaha.

I have a 16x18 room, but it's open on one side to a equal size dining room. Any idea if the AVR will lack power?

The AVR should do fine, but I would grab a Denon or Pioneer instead. My experience with Yamaha is that they tend to be rather "bright" or harsh sounding when paired with the monitor series.

Thanks for the help guys. I have already ordered the 667, Monitor 70s and CS2. I am still trying to decide between Monitor 40s and 50s for the rear surrounds and decide on a subwoofer. I was toying with the idea of not ordering the woofer, but may be after hooking it all up I might end up getting one.

I can't remember but I think that model does have pre outs so that way if you wanted to you could always ad an amp if you wanted more power.

I personally don't care for Yammys due to I don't like the YPAO auto correction but perfer Pio's MCACC. Also I think Pio sounds better with the monitor or RTI series speakers.

One thing though if your doing a lot of movie watching you are going to want a sub. Its what will give you all the bass in the movie so if there is a crash or door slam etc it will make a difference vs the towers trying to do it.

Thanks for the input, I debated greatly between 667 and Pio-1020K. I got the Yamaha mainly because it has a the pre-amp out, standby passthrough for HDMi and a discrete amplifier design.

So if the power is insufficient, looks like I will end up getting an additional amp. And looks like getting a sub is a formality.

I liked my Yamaha Rxv-1800 with my old monitors because it added detail to the top end without being too bright. I think you'll be just fine.

I have the older Yamaha 630 and while it does tend to be on the bright side, I never find it unbearably so. For a mid-price receiver, it does its job well. I think you'll be fine.

Thanks all for your inputs, I should be getting it delivered in a few days so will post the outcome once I hook it all up and test it.

Go with Monitor 30's as surrounds instead of the 40's or 50's. Built in keyhole mount to put them on the wall, smaller in size and sound just as good for surrounds as the Monitor 40's...

I'd agree with EndersS there. I run M-30s as surrounds (I also own some TSI-300s I could use instead, but don't really think it makes a HUGE difference in my space--not a lot of information back there below the handling range of the M-30s?)

I also think that of the Polk speakers I've heard, the M series is the LEAST bright with lower end Yamaha AVRs. The 1800 mentioned above and higher Yamaha models take on a more 'neutral' less bright sound and should not be confused with Yamahas lower models. Once you get above the 1000 dollar price point Yamaha AVRs can compete with a lot of others head-to-head. I have a cheapo Yamaha Integrated sitting on my desk (about 450 MSRP) and I'm a bit surprised by how well it pairs with my Energy RC-10s?).

I read some reviews for that Yamaha and all agree that it's a very smooth sounding receiver. For it's price point, it's said to be a tough receiver to beat. Let us know what you think when you get it.
