Starting to build a garage gym

I loved going to the gym...to workout. But what I didn't like; the crowds, meatheads and no privacy. So after doing some research we set out this morning to start building our garage gym. We bought a spin bike and an ab glider. My wife and I LOVE spinning so this was a must as the first item of purchase.

Today I plan to get everything assembled, get the TV out of the entertainment room in the house and into the garage, and hook up a brand new pair of RT25i's to the garage rig for some tunes.

My wife and I are super-excited to get this going. It's been long time coming as we love working out. Next month with the $70 in cash-back coupons I got from today's purchases I will start my free weight rig.
If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.

    climate motherfuggin' control!

i can get away with turning on my swamp cooler at the beginning of the hot season, but once we creep above 95 degrees or when it's humid out, this no longer works. doing heavy squats in a 105 degree garage isn't fun.

make sure you have this base covered.

oh, and one more thing, try incorporating a long punching/kicking bag to your gym.

Yes, home gyms. The best location for gear to gather dust.

I have a treadmill, dumbbells, Olympic bar and weights, a bench press, inclined bench, and a flat bench. However, I still go to the gym. At home it is to easy to say "I think I will just rest on the couch a little before exercising.", or "I'm to tired. I will do it tomorrow".

On the other hand, once I am at the gym I will work out, no matter what excuses I can come up with.

Of course, the few times a year I do use the home gear does make it worthwhile.

    Good luck.

We don't have drastic temp swings here. If it does get too hot in the garage I have a portable A/C unit that I can use.

I got gym burnout. Too difficult to try and get to, too many different schedules to follow depending on the classes I wanted and at peek times, way too crowded. No worries with any of that at home.

I do want to do up the garage so it mocks the gym a bit to make it feel more like being at one. The main thing, I need to find some hot chicks in tight workout outfits to come over. :)

When do you plan on getting her the stripper's pole? I've heard it is a great workout and has more than one advantage. You could hire a "teacher" for her and then you'd have your hot chick in tight workout outfits, or better.

Hmmm, very interesting...thank you for bringing this to my attention:tongue: We already have a workout room in the basement, but no stripper's pole:frown: What was I thinking:eek: And no, before anyone asks, no pics lol.

I have a small garage gym...but it is too hard for me to get motivated so I go to the gym and enjoy it much more. The key is finding a friend to go with everyday so that you can hold each other accountable. Congrats on your gym.

Yes, it is. But, it only takes up 1/2 of the garage. The other half was empty other then our beach cruisers.

That is the key we are missing. Plus, it's just too difficult for us to "go" to the gym. We work out at home more-so than going to the gym, we've just decided to go ahead and make an official workout space.

Man, I would love to do that and add a power rack (for safety) with olympic plates.

I read somewhere awhile back that those with home gyms were more likely to maintain their fitness goals five years after starting. I can't recall where I read it.

    Good luck!

I put a lot of thought into a home gym and decided with a four post rack with moveable bench (with attachment points) + barbell + weights + bowflex 90lb dbs you can do most exercises including

Pullups (reverse, neutral, wide), dips (with added dip bars), deadlift, squat, bench (incline, flat), military press, seated shoulder press, upright row, bent over row, bent over db row, chest fly (incline, flat), french press (skull crusher), curls, db raises (side, front, rear).... and the list goes on and on.

If you add a random all in one type cable machine.. you can do nearly everything that you would do at the gym.... motivation being the key problem

I think this is all just a big excuse to get another 2-channel rig.
