color banding problems on direct

When the semi annual direct tv Lnb replacement takes place at our house, the color banding all but disappears.
over time it is back with a vengeance, sunrises or sunsets, or graphics that are supposed to be a gradual change in shades of color, are instead well defined bands, as if there is a line drawn between each shade of color.
It can be very distracting, not at all visible on blu ray.
Is it a curse on my family, or is it common.
