I'm up too! Two days of lounging--got to get out today while the good weather is still with us. It finally cleared for an evening BBQ last night (which was good and bad--ate too much and inhaled too much smoke!).

Swam 30 min. Day 2 of no Diet Cokes. Sure, it has no calories but I think the 2-4 cans per day is messing up either my kidneys or bladder or both.

What's the deal with the Diet Coke? Did you drink more than one? Because one soft drink doesn't do much either way for me. Just curious!

1-6 cans per day (I'm including free refills at the restaurants) since 2005 when one of my diabetic friends had me test my blood glucose with his meter and the results screamed pre-diabetic. Switched from Coke to Diet that day.

Lately, I've been having to get up in the middle of the night to urinate. Problem went away when I stopped drinking the stuff. It started as more frequent trips to the urinal during the day but I was associating it with the high volume of liquids, including D.C., I was drinking.

Now, I'm not saying Diet Coke is a bad product nor am I warning all Polkies to stay away from it. I'm just noticing a physical change and I'm modifying my behavior to fix what I see is a problem. I'll probably limit myself to 1-2 per week but for now I need to stay away from it.

i have been overweight and back about forever. topping 292 and bottoming, loooooooong time ago, 182 lbs.

my goal weight is 220 but my current weight is around 255-262.

anyways my wife is training in a nice program and i decided to join her on the nutrition part. i have lost about 8-9 lbs in a month and have honestly excersized three times, not proud of it but being real.

the diet is very interesting: consist on having a high protein diet and very low carb, you only get carbs on the breakfast and only carbs that came directly from the ground, like potatoes, plantains, pumpkin etc the rest of the day you eat chicken or steak or porkchops or fish with salads, two snacks that can be a handfull of any kind of nuts or a protein shake (this helps getting the sugar cravings under control).

it is more of a shift on the kind of food you take since it does not restrict amount of food you can eat.

the interesting part is that sundays or day 7 is called charge day and on that day one of the meals can be whatever you want plus dessert.

my plan is when i loose 25 more pounds and want to maintain that weight i will make wednesdays and sundays the charge days, that way i can always talk myself into waiting for those days to get any cravings.

in my case it helps having a structured plan like that, otherwyse everyday is charge day and trust me in my case that is very bad.

i hope that this plan helps some of the guys here at the forum so we can all enjoy our hobby for much longer.

Ran my first 5K in about 40 min (results not posted yet). Felt great. Training helped tremendously. Wore the same clothes and shoes. Since I've been running in the late afternoon heat, the 7:30AM start time was nice and cool (85 degrees).

    http://www.runontexas.com/Races/TooHot/toohotinfo.htm

Nice race. The view of the lake was a pleasant addition. For the $30+ fee, I got a technical sleeveless running shirt, a technical cap, New Balance towel (they had them in ice and were handing them out when you cross the finish line), bananas, apples, coozy, and bottle water. There were a lot more stuff given out but I didn't hang around long afterwards.

Parking was bad and I got there 1 hour before the race.

Since I wasn't a contendor at my usual 13min pace, I got in line at the back, started slowly, took my time, sprinted the last 1/2 mile, and had a fantastic run. I saw a lot of folks go too fast and burn out. Also, there were many runners doing all sorts of elaborate stretches and yoga before the race, I did not, but I didn't see anyone do it afterwards while I stretched post race. Weird.

I'll probably run this one again next year. Currently working on lowering my heart rate.

    Good stuff! Congrats!

I'm still waging the weight loss wars over here. One hour on the dirt bike yesterday proved how 'inadequate' my aerobic endurance was as I huffed and puffed myself up some smallish hills?

Off to the free weights today where I can take my time!

Congrats on the weight loss, however I would like to put my 2 cents on your diet (please don't take this personally, I'm only trying to help). If you look in terms of JUST weight loss, there is only one thing that matters.... calories. Your diet could only consist of cake and ice cream, but if you ate less calories than you burn, you would still lose weight. The reason you lost that weight is NOT cause you dropped your carb intake, but because food filled with protein (and fat) generally fills you up more, hence you eat less. The problem with this kind of diet (atkins diet), is that these high fat foods do not work well with your arteries etc.. It seems from the examples you showed here (fish and chicken) are great, just don't chow down on bacon and think its all good since there isn't carbs. Carbs are good, they give you energy, don't take them for granted!

So if you are strictly doing this to lose weight, all you need to do is give yourself a calorie ceiling and stick to it. You can eat whatever you want, as long as you keep it under that ceiling, you'll lose weight. However, if you want to lose weight AND overall feel better (more energy, more strength, better looking body, etc), thats where you want to eat a variety of foods to recieve the nutrition and energy you need, and then burn it off with excercise.

Anyways, we could go all day talking about this, but it doesn't matter if you follow my advise or not, I hope nothing but the best for ya

40:45 is still pretty damn good for a 5k run, don't put yourself down like that. You must've just had some stiff competition.

Anywho, I've tried something a little different with my cardio. Instead of jogging, I've been going to the track to do sprinting on the straightaways and walking in the curves... Wow, that takes A LOT out of me. But I did notice when I played hockey this spring that jogging didn't help me "that" much with my stanima, so maybe this will do the trick

Hey bud, we seem to be on similar boat ;)

I'm on slow-carb diet, which is similarly structured with 6 days of low-carb days and 1 'binge' day. We stay away from white carbs (bread, rice, potatoes) and generally substitutes them with beans (black beans, pinto, etc), but I pretty much gorge myself with proteins (steaks for lunch? YES). Sugary crap are also a no no for the 6 days.

So far I've lost 30 pounds in 4 months (with MINIMAL workout) and I do a monthly blood check to monitor my cholesterol levels and liver functions. They're excellent and my old fashioned, conservative doctor is quite baffled with this diet because he's 'classically' trained with the 'low fat, low calorie diet'.

There has been some popular books about this that explains what actually happens (elevated insulin level in the blood activates fat-storage mechanism, that's why we need to stay away from sugar and highly processed carbs); so yeah, keep at it. It works with lots of people ;)

Not a bad idea to get your blood checked just to ensure that your body is not doing anything negative from this new lifestyle that it's being put through though.

You're right tommyboy the 'physics' is a 'b@$&h'! Energy in/Energy out..you just have to unbalance the ratio and it's not fun!

One hour on the dirt bike. It's even 'hot' up here today. But it's the super humidity that makes it pain.

I'm trying out The Primal Blueprint (also see Mark's Daily Apple). I've stopped counting calories, eaten more, and lost 3 pounds. I really don't care about my weight other than to get rid of the last 5lbs of my belly (almost there). I like the lifestyle because it fits in with what I do and sustainability is what I've been looking for.

The description doesn't get too much into what this particular diet does, but looks like a variation of the atkins diet, is that true? I'm not against the atkins diet per se (as I try to eat a lot of meat in my diet anyways), I just enjoy too much of the other stuff to give it all up. I love bread, french fries, etc. etc. I've just trained myself to eat less of it, and it seemed to have worked out good for me so far.

Uhh, this statement urks me... FYI you aren't cheating the system or anything buddy. you are simply eating less calories than you burn off. The biggest problem with diets is not people losing weight, its after they get to their goal, the pounds come right back and then some. Though excercise isn't exactly needed for weight loss(in fact I think you should avoid very hard cardio, as it can do some good damage to knees etc.), it is IMO crucial to keep the pounds off. Obviuously it burns calories, but It also keeps your metabolism running. it will turn your flabby (though you are skinnier from dieting) body into better shape. So when you doing things with friends or kids/grandchildren, you don't feel like complete crap doing it. But above all, excercise begins to change your lifestyle. When you go out to eat, you will wonder "I worked out so hard this week, do I really need to binge on all this food?" It gets you in that healthy mindset, which helps with consistancy of living a healthy lifestyle.

Are you a doctor? Or are you just regurgitating read stuffs back to other readers? ;)

I'm also doing some other stuffs to promote increased metabolism just that they were not phyiscal exercises. And from my 3 weeks vacation trip I've just returned from, it seems that the weight gain is very minimal because I pretty much laxed on the diet (travelled halfway across the world and missing out on the gourmet opportunities? are you kidding me).

I think calorie in/out is an oversimplification of what actually happens in our body. It's not a direct storage/burning/excretion facility that handles a single currency (calories).

Yeah, I just cut and pasted from other people just to stir the pot with you. I have never experienced doing this myself and never seen friends and family be successful (for years).

I think you are trying to overcomplicate something thats easy to plan, its just hard to execute. Eat what you want but less of it, and include a decent workout routine (no, not just walk around a track twice a week talking on your phone) and I guarantee you will feel much better overall (and look better too) than just cutting carbs. Why people like you are so afraid to strain themselves is beyond me. You can do whatever you want its your body not mine, but I just hate to see this notion, that pretends you can become (and just as important, STAY) in thin shape just by what you eat, spread like this (especially to my fellow polkies:wink:).

P.S. It is as simple as calorie eaten/calories burned. The complication occurs with how many calories you are burning and how you can change that number (with excercise, your metabolism, etc.) Nevermind I don't know what I'm talking about, I need to be a doctor to have any knowledge in the subject, silly me.

Before going all judgmental on someone, why don't you learn more about their conditions first? What if I have a some sort of physical disability? Or other constraints?

Note that I was never against physical workouts at all, just that I was making a point that interestingly, (s)low carb diet actually works and that the science of 'low fat diet' that's been promoted by AHA is actually questionable (lots of it written already, an interesting book about that is "Good calories, bad calories").
P.S. It is as simple as calorie eaten/calories burned. The complication occurs with how many calories you are burning and how you can change that number (with excercise, your metabolism, etc.)

That's the thing, are you subscribing to the concept of 'a calorie is a calorie', wherever it comes from?
Have you heard about the thermic effect of protein? The effect of insulin on how you burn your food for energy and store the excess as fat?
