Glad to see that my absolute non-effort and total lack of input from this quarter didn't go to waste.

    Congrats !

    Thanks!

It was on free will and moral responsibility and the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard. Not nearly as interesting as the info on this forum!

Well, first of all it was very rude of me not to congratulate you on your milestone! :-(
It is, of course, a rite of passage - but an essential one, nonetheless!

The story's not all that interesting, really, but it is Polk related.
I was, needless to say, pretty wound up the day before mine (in November, 1986)... my colleague (and, subsequently, post-doc adviser) knew I was way too wound up to be hanging around the lab, so he said "I need some hifi equipment!" and we went over to Soundscape in Baltimore and spent the afternoon listening to stuff. He bought a NAD amplifier and CP player and a pair of whatever the then-current Monitor 7 version was (7B?)... and kept me from going nuts waiting for the next day!

Mine postdoc adviser and his wife were patrons of the arts when they were in Baltimore (predominantly a group called Pro Musica Rara), and owned (and, presumably still own) a beautiful harpsichord made by a fellow called Rod Regier in Maine. My PhD adviser and his wife were both musicians (as was their son). Me? I play a hifi.

    But I digress...

Congrats! Actually, "I" find this topic quite interesting, although not a philosopher--it's always been an interest of mine. As for trouble with Dissertation Advisors...tell me about it. I hardly ever talk to mine anymore and it's been a couple of decades--at least. He was the most asocial person I've ever met--knew a lot about the subject but left most of his 'humanity' behind?

The better the Grad program the more class As in it. And I don't mean warm sounding musical amps? You should be relieved that you're OUT!

Good work. Drop us, me, a line if and when the Diss. becomes a book. I'd like to read it!

It's an endemic problem. My postdoc adviser had an explanation for the reason that so often a rift develops between mentor and mentee. Said he, "The problem is: you have to kill your supervisor." I.e., by definition, the student moves at least a little bit beyond the thinking/scope/expertise of his/her supervisor when the student publishes and defends his or her thesis. This can sometimes bring out the worst in folks (in my business, lab science, I think this is due to selection of folks with highly developed egos and poor social skills - a bad combination!).

I had a transient falling-out with mine but time healed those wounds and we still correspond occasionally. He must be nearing retirement...

EDIT: Speaking of misanthropic advisors... I would imagine that the PhDs, recent PhDs, and those still in boot camp are familiar with this... but... just in case some of you are not...

    cnh,
you do anthropology is that right? I thought I saw that in another thread. Definitely a topic I am very interested in. A lot of my work revolves around issues in philosophical anthropology, what is distinctive about human agency. Of course you may not think that counts as anthropology, but nonetheless something I am interested in.

Did you make it through w/o revision or only minor revisions? Did your defense require a cognate? Congrats. As the supporting spouse of a PhD it was rough at times.

I have to take out or revise one sentence (really the problem is with the misuse of one term in one sentence), so I am pretty happy about that. I do have to format this beast over the next few days while teaching 3 classes, so that should be fun.

Good catch. That is right and I got to fight my way through the Postmodern 'turn' in the Social Sciences. What a crock that was--but for a while, it was like I couldn't say anything--wasn't allowed to speak. Because I'm pretty BIG on "AGENCY" and "Responsibility" and the criticism of TOTAL relativism--especially moral relativism unchained. I think there are 'soft' claims for certain basic 'human' understandings and conventions--perhaps not fully universal but workable solutions to the problems of dealing with others. A lot of my insights came from reading the 20th century dialogue that Japanese philosophers had with Continental Philosophy (I work on East Asia--with a China concentration). But yeah...all through Grad School I was the guy interested in the epistemological and ontological claims of most Anthro Theorists...or at least their assumptions...and then along came Foucault and the GLOVES were OFF! But enough of this non-audio drivel--I'm sure we're boring the guys!

Lol. That's great. My wife had a minor revision (a total of 5 sentences) that her chair took two weeks and four revisions to approve. Totally bizarre. We are talking like 100 words:confused:

Coll stuff. One of my best friends did her dissertation and Marion and Levinas. I am actually co-teaching and interdisciplinary course in the social sciences right now, but the focus is more on sociology with some economics and political theory throw in. I really with we did more psychology and anthropology; oh well maybe next year. Speaking of which I have better get prepped for class!
