horrible squealing coming out of the car's engine.. can't tell if it's the H20 pump or alternator bearings. either way.. in read that on the 2000 Neon, it's a big hassle to replace the water pump..

the alternator is less of a hassle.. so I hope it's the bearings on that and not the H20 pump.

Usually when bearings go out of a water pump, it will leak coolant. Take the belt off and wiggle and spin the pullies to see wich ones have excessive play or rough feeling. It could just be a belt tensioner or the belt its self. When belts dry out they squeel pretty badly

Are you sure it's not the belt itself?

Could also be a tensioner or idler pulley. Take the serpentine belt off and try turning each moving thing by hand. You should be able to tell which one is making the noise.
    Ludicrous gibs!

The tension pulley bearing was the noise maker on our ford f250. Remove the belt and spin all the pulleys and the alternator. Hope thats it and not the water pump. The belt could be old and needs to be replaced. You might replace it anyway because you will replace it if you replace the waterpump or alternator.

If it is squealing and not grinding it is probably the belt. There is a weep hole on the underside of the water pump. Usually when the bearings go bad there is some antifreeze on the bottom of the pump. It is usually a small amount and not easy to find.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Easiest way to eliminate the belt as the problem is with the engine running spray some water on the belt with a spray bottle. If it stops squeeling you know it's the culprit. I had the same issue on an old F250 I had. Thought it was something else and ran by the parts store and they shot it with the water bottle. Squeeling stopped (for a minute until it dried)

I had the same problem with my water pump Al. It turned out that the belt was fine but the pulling on the water pump would seize from time to time. Either way there was always leaking water present.

no squealing sound today.. checked the belt.. looks good... not seeing any dripping from the water pump.. but the car is due for it's 90k service.. so it'll go in early next week to the shop.

when revved up though... it appears there is to much movement in the small engine... so maybe some of the motor mounts are broke too... i dunno

If you have a 1/2" or 3/4" PVC pipe piece (chunks cheaply sold, 8' sections cheaper yet). Use that as a stethoscope (carefully) while running. Place the PVC piece carefully around. The loudest part will hurt your ears maybe, as it will be a louder area. Again, caution when searching.
