and they will be here on Tuesday! I decided to take advantage of Magnepan's offer of the MMG in-home trial at $599. I have been wanting to try them for years now, and with the price of even low end speakers pishing that price, I figured it was a no-brainer to at least give them a shot. I will take some pics and post initial impressions after they get here next week.

Well... they are here, and they image like crazy, even better than the 2.3TL's do., but as fully expected, they lack the punch of a cone-based design. I can only imagine how much better the larger Maggies are in that department, and they will definately be on my list, but for now these little girls will do just fine for my fledgling two channel rig. I hope to work them out pretty good over the next several days before the Indy meet. The Gear... John,
Since these are new, do you have to break them in for a while to loosen them up some?
And what sub are you going to mate with them? Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -
The Magnepan MMG....audios **** tease.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I think any new speaker has a bit of a break-in period, but I have no intention of running a sub at this point. In the short time they have been set up, I am convinced that they are far more detailed that my LSi-15's, and seem to have about as much heft to the bottom end. These are a very liquid, lush sounding speaker, and they really draw you into the soundstage. They are most definately NOT SDA's but they seem to present an enveloping sound that comes from everywhere. Another thing I can say is that they are very controlled as well, tight, accurate and quite punchy for their size, just nothing there below 50hz.
So far, I have listened to a bit of Dire Straits and Linda Ronstadt's "Lush Life" and the detail in her voice on these littlest of Maggies is breathtaking. I can highly recommend these speakers to anyone on a budget looking for something that is truly special for their money. The Gear... I had these for a bit. I thought they sounded amazing with string instruments, very realistic and bass was tight and clean. The weak point for me was that it lacked the umph I needed for rock music or powerful classical music passages. I'm sure a fast ported sub would help.

I won't be using them for rock, just the smooth, laid back with a cognac in one hand and a cigar in the other kind of tunes....The Gear... I do... and I will as soon as the wife returns with the damn camera!:cool:
The SDA's positively dwarf these Maggies. From the front they are very similar in size to an RTA-11, but they are only an inch thick! The Gear... O the sweet sounds i'm imagining your hearing.
I am going to make up something for my ease of hooking up my maggies and my last pinnacle 12" sub tomorrow. I'll comment tomorrow also on what I hear now. It's been a long while.:frown:Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -

I think I saw this slogan on some of their print ads!Jay

Congrats! I HIGHLY recommend a sub with the MMG's. Preferably sealed box design, 10-12" and you'll love 'em.
Mark's right, the smaller Maggies are a tease, but with a quality sub they can sound amazing."The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." Neil deGrasse Tyson. -
As much bottom end heft as LSi15's and image better than your 2.3's? Someone needs a class in loudspeaker placement/setup."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. Perhaps... I spent all of 5 minutes on that yesterday. The LSi's spend all their time in surround duty as I was just not that impressed with them as mains. The 2.3TL's are amazing, but the center image is not as detailed and layered as the Maggies are. I am going to upgrade the crossovers and replace the tweets in them, as I feel they will image much better once that work is done. The SDA's are set up properly however... 3 feet off the side walls and 7 inches from the back wall.:cool:The Gear... That's what I was thinking but didn't say it. I've heard modified Maggie MMG's that blew me away in the imaging part, but I've always felt my SDA 1C's were in the same ballpark as those. Properly set-up Maggies do it better, no doubt, than SDA's, but not day and night. Maggies have no bass to speak of especially in an average size room so I have no idea why these would have the "heft" of LSi 15's..........must be a special Nooshie model.
Not knocking the Maggies at all.......but something isn't quite right with Noosh's statement based on my experience's.
H9
P.s. I thought the SDA 2.3TL's were already modded? That will make a big difference (especially the tweets). My 1C's are modded and I feel they are in the same ballpark with Maggie MMG's as far as imaging. If you really want Maggie MMG's to knock your socks off talk to Ricardo or ALL212, they modded the frames and x-overs (huge improvements with modded x-overs) and they are superb, but both still use subs for anything below about 50Hz"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. The Maggies do vocal, acoustic, strings, etc like no other speaker I have heard.

I have always found the LSi's to be rather muddy in the bass department, and though the Maggies don't dig very deep, the tightness of the bass that is there seems much better than the LSi's. I am going to do some A/B testing between the two tonight when I get home from work. I am also going to move the 2.3TL's to the spare bedroom so my wife can appreciate the MMG's when she gets home. I hope she will appreciate the look and give me the go-ahead for some 20.1's:biggrin:The Gear... Completely different animals.
If I could, I'd have a separate 2-ch system just for maggies and another 2-ch system just for LSi's or SDA's.
If you ever get a chance to upgrade down the line, check out some 3.6's. Put them on Mye Stands and modify yourself a set of external crossovers and you'll be in heaven.Truck setup
