There are actually 2 on atlantas cl.

Both same price, have read all the reviews, and comments i can find.

Predictably, they say very good entry level to mid grade, but not the most refined.

I am going from ht rigs to the best 2 channell rig i can slap together on our budget.

I guess the main question is, are the older adcoms still worth a shot from a dependability aspect.

Dont really have the budget to spring for this and get it fixed.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a used GFA 555ll that I've used daily for maybe 3 mos. and it works very well. I also have a 5800 (12yrs) and a 7500 both used that are working just fine but anything can go wrong with older equipment. For $275 I'd buy both and have them reconditioned............but that's me. That's a lot of amp for $275 if it is in good working condition. I personally think the older Adcoms are a step above starter equipment.

For $275 I'd go for it. I got an Adcom 545 a couple years ago or so for $200 and I've never had any issues with it. As far as I know, the previous owner never had it reconditioned or anything either. These older Adcoms run like tanks.

appreciate the input guys, especially bens cryptic message.

the guy is being kind of a jerk.

but theres a nad power tracker 2200, for 200.

not the pe, and there is no mention of upgrade of the relay problems i have read about on old posts here on cp.

wondering, this guy bought this from stereo village, where i used to work, IN THE 80s.

should i expect to have this worked on pretty soon.

Sorry about that. I had technical difficulties with my intro-net. That is a good price for local, and you can test it.

just read my last post, it sounds like first two sentences are related.

They are not, the cl seller is being a bit of a jerk, not ben, i kinda thought there was some sort of tech problem, such as wife walking in and finding you on that damn site again, you better not be buying something from those yahoo friends of yours again.

something like that cutting short a pos.......................................gotta go

I've have my gfa55 for about 7months now and no problems what so ever. I bought mine sight unseen from AUDIO Classics for $300 w/ shipping thrown in. The amp can play all day and it doesn't get warm. For$275 I would snatch that up in a hurry.Mine has rack mount front very industrial look.

just be careful when buying used Adcom,,, cannot remember the model, but there was some issues with the output transistors which required cleaning/replacement,,Ben can chime in about this. Also, there is an easy tweak which tames some of the brightness that these are known for.Good luck in you quest.

Early model Adcoms are some of the most reliable used amps you can buy.

It was, if I'm not mistaken, only the 565 mono blocks that had leaky caps after a while. The 555 and 545 are fine. I own both.

As far as 'refined' or not, most of that will be determined by your PRE. Get something like an Adcom GFP-750 and see if the 555 is 'refined' or not! Sure it's not going to sound like a 10K amp. But it will sound as good as something two or three times its price.

I hope Ben chimes in, because I also believe they are pretty easy to renew and bring back to original status.

    Good Luck....
