This isn't a troll post. I'm just curious if anyone has a clue how this tech. works. Is it just a built in spl meter? Has anyone had experience with this tech? I'm wondering if it's something new or just fancy bose talk for something very simple. After asking the very helpful and knowledgeble staff over @ bose..I got zero answer. Here's the link. http://bose.com/home_audio/ht_systems/ls35/

I'd say auto-EQ is a pretty good guess since site instructions say, "Wearing special headsets equipped with microphones instead of speakers, you sit in five of your favorite places to listen to music or watch TV."
Five favorite places??? I'd have to come up with four more...More later,

Yeah, it's a set of headphones, but without the ear peices. The part on top of the ears contains the microphone. The included dvd then emits some pulsating tones at different volumes.
It is fun to run when the store is open because you will be standing there with the headset on with the tones going off, and people will walk by and whisper 'What is he doing? Is it some kind of video game?' Then the intercom will go off and it will make me re-do it, dammit.
I think it only makes you do three seating locations, but you can do five. When they first rolled it out, our Bose rep put the cubes in tupperware containers and played it without any adjustments, sounded horrible. Then he ran ApartIQ and it made major improvements, although still a little rubbery sounding. heh -
Tupperware... the ultimate tweak... WAAAAAAAAAAAAAMore later,

Didn't you know? Tupperware was invented by Bose............. it was used as the enclosure for the first Bose Cubes........... "Space age plastic housing" they called it............
-
I remember my Mom having a keychain that was a mini-tupperware container....does that mean it was one of the first Bose cubes?
I once put a Bose speaker near my nether region, and it had no effect. Granted, that could go both ways, but I am half-donkey.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Tupperware huh?
When the bose rep came and did it for our store, he used those plastic top-hats that the cheap magicians wear. Same result, sounded better after tuning, but I still don't completely trust it. I wonder why. Maybe because I think the company is fundamentaly dishonest. -

Which half?
Bose doesn't appear to claim a patent on this, only a TM on the name and software. Sounds like simply a combination of two ideas... auto EQ, which has been around for at least 20 years, and auto speaker-level adjustment, which does away with the need for a meter.
Makes sense... a lot of Bose stuff is geared towards people who don't really want to mess with anything like interconnects or bass response and who will pay a premium price. This has to be one pretty cool thing for a mustachioed Corvette-driving guy to show off to his friends or.. oh ya.. the laaaaaadies.
I don't get the tupperware/hat thing.. why/when were the cubes covered? -
Is the hat not the db meter, taking readings at different sitting postitions?
It all sucks whatever it is, I'm sure.
Instead of 'Better Sound Through Research', maybe they should try 'We can't sell you on sound, perhaps we can on gimmicks'

The idea was that if it could adapt the sound to tupperware, imagine what it could do in a room....whatever the room conditions, you will get the same great Bose sound. -
Ok, so lets say you were stupid and put the left main right on the wall, and the right main on a stand in the middle of the room....the EQ will shelf down the midrange on the left main (making it less stressed) and boosting the midrange on the right (remember these are 2" full rangers, it's going to be more stressed)........would that not change the sound, having one speaker working way harder that the other one?
Just an example but you get what im saying..........the tupperwear thing, that prolly needed ongodly amounts of trebble eq, which = more power, more power = heat, heat = power compression, power compression = sounds bad
I'm sure it works, but it can't replace proper placement to begin with. Also, they say nothing of time delays, perhaps that would confuse the average visitor to the bose site? -
I am a Polk guy but I thought I would give you a response based on some demo work we did in direct comparison with the Bose Lifestyle system using the "Adaptiq" feature versus the Polk DS7200 complete system. Bose's Adaptiq system provides the user with an interactive equalization circuit which is designed to adjust the Bose system response to suit the listening room and the position of the system in a given room. The interactive set up is accomplished by using a DVD provided by Bose in conjunction with a headphone apparatus which sits above your ears and contains microphones. You wear this device and move to five diverse listening positions around the room while the system puts out alternating white noise and some low frequency pulses. The system "listens" to the responses in those positions in the room and computes an average equalization that supposedly opimizes the system response in your listening space. We used this procedure in several venues while setting up a direct AB comparison to the Polk DS7200 system. Using the DS7200's manual adjustment capabilities and our ears we were in all cases able to achieve a performace preferred over the Bose by those participating in the demonstration. The Polk system retails for considerably less (about $1500 without a DVD). I musy say however that the way Bose executed the procedure for their customer was very clean and convincing, a tidy bit of product development with a friendly user interface. If I were a normal customer who purchased the Bose system without an opportunity to compare the end result with a competitive alternative I would have been undoubtedly impressed with Bose's technical prowess. I imagine I would also be convinced that I had purchased something that was now optimized for my space. So I guess what I am saying is that the audible benefits of this feature, to me, do not seem nearly as significant as their potential marketing benefit with the customers who use it.

I'll help ya out on this one Jim, since we know you don't want to come in here and bash competitors.
Bose once again uses their genius marketing to sell crap!
There...I said it! I feel better now!

I think that is pretty much the conclusion we've come to over time on this forum, except for the couple of people here who tend to defend Bose. Bose products can't hold up against competitors' in terms of sound quality, and certainly not in terms of sound you get for the money you spend. BUT... most Bose customers are NOT doing comparison shopping, and they ARE unlikely to want to play with settings. How many other manufacturers have brick&morter outlets that carry ONLY their products? So, once again, Bose does what they do best.. they effectively market and sell convenience and twinkie heaters to people who don't know or don't care that they could be doing better for the money.
I think Bose customers are people who simply have a fundamentally different perspective on audio than the average guy here. I'm often blown away by the money some of you guys spend on components, given that I'm running a HT receiver that cost me less than $150. Yesterday, I talked to a guy here at work who wouldn't spend $150 on a complete audio/video system (except for a big TV), including speakers. So, it's all good.. well, you know.. except for Bose stuff. -
It's good to see more people from Polk in the forums. Hopefully it is not a rare occasion. If you want to take a break from posting to develop new speakers to wow and amaze us, that is okay though.

Fundamentally dishonest? I think not. Fundamentally Innovative? I would say Yes. Bose realised long ago that from a Business standpoint, it made more sense to market their products to the 95% of people that actually purchase equipment. The other 5% is insignificant. I doubt that most of you know that The President of Polk is a former Bose employee as are many of the staff. Bose has an engineering department that would rival the likes of Sony Corp. and others. Regardless of what you may think of their product the company continues to grow year after year. Their is some science behind their products ie; more than 70% of the human voice occurs in the Middle Range frequencies. Bose has done extensive studies on Psycho -acoustics , which of course would be The human ear and how it perseives sound. Say what you will but the company sells tons of speakers, and I have never witnessed a salesperson "Hold a Gun" to a customers head and force them to buy. Apparently they are hearing something they like?????? -

He's trying to justify the $1,000+ he spent for mediocre sound from a marketing company."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche
