HI GUYS, I found something that I can afford to do and give me some audio pleasure at the same time. Not being a computer literate preson and a little more on the audio side I thought I could accomplish a task that would be no trouble.I bought 2 new 50ft rca cables (the run from puter to living rm is a long one) and I had a y splitter w/ 2 female and a male headphone jack. I unplug my regular headphones plug the splitter, turn on streaming Greatful Dead on I-TUNES turn on my Yamaha to audio 1 and I get music But also a god awful humm. I called Yamaha and they said that's the ports to put the RCAs , so what gives.
Can anyone tell me why this hum is here and not when using regular headphones.
Is this the way to do it or some other way to get puter music to my main rig.I also already have an I-pod w/ a dock so don't go there. Thanks...LW

50' of RCA is quite a bit. Seems highly suspect as the cause, but I'm no tech. I'm sure others will weigh in. I know that a long time ago, I bought a cheap (~30-40 bones) 15' RCA and had the exact same problem. I run lots of long distance cables now but theyre all digital (HDMI and DVI-D @ 50' and 80') and theyre about an inch thick. I imagine anaolg is even harder to pass over that distance without some serious cable, not to mention proper shielding if passing by electronics or electric.

Most likely the 50' runs of RCA. That is a heckuva long run. Get some two meter cables and repeat the process and see if you get the hum.

You REALLY need XLR to do this.

Sounds like you might need to add a preamp between the computer and receiver because the signal output from the headphone jack is not "hot" enough, causing you to turn up the receiver too loud.
Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support
group for that. It's called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.

Have you tried disconnecting just one of the rca cables to see if the hum goes away?
What type of y splitter do you have?

drselect ---I beleive I did try the one at a time thing and it still hums. The splitter I'm using might be suspect, later on that. The actual splitter is a y w/ male headphone3.5 lead
and 2 female rca ports. On the Yamaha end it's just the male RCAs into audio1. Now this splitter was used and I found it were someone left it at a Radio Shack store,I asked for it and they said the actual owner might be back, so no . The next day I went back w/ a different counterperson,I asked if the splitter was there it was I took it and maybe just maybe it's the weak link. The rca cable I bought are pretty heavy duty so I really hope it's not a length issue because there's no way of moving either the puter or my rack.So I ordered 2 different styles of jacks and they should come any day and hpoefully I'll have tunes......LW

This is kinda in a different direction, but I've bought a couple of used airport express routers off ebay and use those. You just plug them into the wall next to your stereo and it has both an optical out and a 3.5mm headphone out. They work flawlessly for me. Once you set them up you can select them right in I-Tunes. What I love about this set-up is I can have it go to multiple rooms. I can also control my music from my I-Pod touch anywhere in the house. Great for sitting on the patio listening to music.

I should also add that you don't need the lastest version of the airport express for this. Since you're just streaming music and not using it for your main internet throughput any older version would be fine. I wouldn't pay more than $50-60 bucks for one. Hope this helps.

You need to run a digital signal over that long of a run.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Sounds like the best option for him. A 50 ft run of rca cable won't cut it. Go wireless, or digital.
