Question about Stolen Ipod App

Last week my son became a robbery victim when someone decided to relieve him of his Ipod touch that he received for Christmas. It was stolen from the high school locker room while he was out at practice. Anyway, we filed an incident report but I realize the harsh likelyhood of retrieval is slim to none. So before we get another one, I did some poking around on the Net and found that there is an App that you can down load that will tell the ISP of where the device is used should it get stolen. Anyone else have any experience or comment on how useful this is or would be ? Thanks.

My Wife has a similar app on her new Verizon Iphone, she went to the grocery store about 2 miles from the house and I was able to locate it within 50 feet or so of her car.

Anyone with a lick of common sense would wipe the device after stealing it

It won't wipe the serial number.

Your talking about kids getting a pod or a pad with free apps so wiping it is unlikely

.... getting caught versus getting $10 dollars of software? besides jailbreak it and download it all free.

Or the mac address. which is even worse. as soon as you plug it in anyone who wants to track it can. If apple wanted to see your mac address through itunes I'm sure they can. maybe they already do.
So, lets say you wrote down the mac address, how would one go about figuring out when someone connects it?

.... tracking a mac address? it's one thing if you know what network it is on, but that thing has wifi, so it connects to a router, which uses it's own mac address to get to the internet.... soo.... who is gonna do this for you?

Sure, if you took it to the apple store, they could probably identify it as stolen... if they have that capability n their system (flag as stolen). As for identifying it by it being connected to the internet... unlikely.

I think there's a better reason not to buy them, other than, "Apple might fund out."

    You're a real smartass, aren't you?

It can't hurt to TRY. Criminals are retards. And I hope that jailbreak and steal motto isn't from personal experience.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

    nap,
I'm sorry to hear of your son's loss. I'm glad he did not experience the loss of his device like these college students in Atlanta.

Sorry for your son's loss. Hopefully this can get back to him.
    Good luck.

Thanks for your sympathy / concern. We will probably get him another Ipod touch but it will not be allowed to go to school. Cheers.

A friend of mine called me last week because a guy in his neighborhood was selling hot iPads. I told him not to buy it because apple would know the serial number and if he connects it to an iTunes acct if they wanted to search for it they probably could.

Do you think I was wrong? Should I call him back and tell him go ahead buy that iPad?

    sureeee.....'a friend'.....
