PSW-505 muddyness - quiet

So I took someone's advice in this thread:
http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116748
I pulled the trigger on a PSW-505.
Currently running it with Monitor 60's and a CS1 center channel. The receiver is a Yamaha HTR 5840.
I set the main speakers to small, and enabled the sub in the audio menu with a 80hz crossover. I have it hooked up from the sub out to the unfiltered input on the sub with a RCA cable. It's a crappy thin cable, but currently don't have any other cables to use. I tried flipping the phase switch on the sub, but doesn't make a whole lot of difference. Currently set at the 0 position. The room is probably medium size with carpet.
However, the sub sounds rather muddy. It also appears somewhat quiet. I can still hear the sub when im outside or something, but in the same room, it doesn't really have the punch that I was hoping for.
When I turn the volume up on the sub it just makes it sound muddier.
Any suggestions, please?

My PSW505 is fine. The why I have mine hooked up, is ...Pre-AMP out to Power Amp IN,Power Amp out, to PSW505 IN,Output from Sub to main speakers....and the bass is fine. Some here that know me,would say,I don't need a sub, with the 1.2's polk and the Kappa 9's. either or...The PSW 505 bass sounds alright to me,for now.PolkAudioClyde

No muddiness here!
I have my 505 sitting in a corner by my couch. The driver points to the wall with the window and the port is facing the couch. My volume is set (on the sub) to 1:00 o'clock and x-over is at 90Hz on the receiver. If I remember correct the sub volume is set to -12db in the receiver too.Panasonic 58" Viera S2 Plasma | Onkyo TX-SR608 | Monitor 70 Series II | CS2 | PSW505 | RC60i -
I would definitely run the calibration first. Also check the phase setting and see if it makes a difference. the Sub crawl would be the next step to see what the best position is.Front - RTiA5's
Rear - RTiA3's
Center - CSiA4
Sub - PSW110 -
Put the sub in the corner and calibrate....then report back.Main Surround -

Which calibration do you refer to?
I will try moving it to the corner. Which direction should I put the driver? Should I have the speaker facing away from the wall, pointing at me, or pointed at the wall? -

My driver is pointing at the wall with the port facing the listing position (see my post above). I'm also 180 deg out of phase.Panasonic 58" Viera S2 Plasma | Onkyo TX-SR608 | Monitor 70 Series II | CS2 | PSW505 | RC60i -
Does anyone connect their Subwoofer without a receiver, you know, PowerAmp out directly to Subwoofer? That's the way I have mine set up. I'm just a two channel junkie.. Love it.PolkAudioClyde

Although you are happy with your results, I might suggest that you turn your sub volume down, and run your calibration again. I always prefer to have the AVR adjustment as close to 0 db as possible. A 12 db adjustment is significant, and would be telling me that my sub volume is set too high. Try it. You can always go back if it doesn't work out. I was surprised when I calibrated this way and my sub ended up at about 10:00 on the sub gain. I was skeptical that I wouldn't be able to notice it, but it sounds excellent. Shakes the entire room at times.
For the OP, where is your sub's volume set? Muddiness usually occurs when it's set too high. -

Sorry if this is irrelevant but I just joined and I'm not sure where the post new threads button is haha. But since I have this sub, I thought I'd start here. Right now I have the PSW 505, two R50s and waiting for the Onkyo TX805 to come in the mail. I have not yet bought anything else yet. However, I am looking into CS, trying to research the differences between CS20, CS2, etc. Not really sure yet, it'd be wonderful to have some feedback. Furthermore, I was looking into the future on either getting the Monitor 70s or the TSIs, any suggestions for what route I should take? I'm quite a music fanatic but I also enjoy having the better-than-theater like experience with gaming reality... probably much like most of you guys.

oh btw, I read in a thread somewhere, when I get new fronts (M series, or TSIs) I'll probably move the R50s to the back.

I moved it to the corner and it seems to have helped. I will play with it more and report back.
