Sub hookup via Multichannel?

So, got a question, hope it isn't dumb....but...
If you are using a BD player with multichannel analog ICs to an AVR, what does the sub IC connection to the AVR perform?
All the bass management and steering would be done in the player and with a powered sub, the AVR isn't doing amplification...so...what is the purpose of a multichannel sub IC to an AVR - couldn't you just go directly to the sub?

If you connect directly from the bdp to the sub, the sub will only work when used by the bdp. If you have a seperate cdp,or stream to your avr, the sub won't be on. Usually an avr has better bass management than a bdp too. By connecting the sub from the avr,you can use it with all available inputs. In your case since your useing analog connections, I would still connect the sub out to the sub in on the avr, then out to the subwoofer itself.HT SYSTEM-

I second tonyb, if you were only using the bdp then I guess it would matter, except also for the volume and distance parameters perhaps (but most bdps with mc outputs can do this as well. Plus my hk actually performs bass management through the multi-channel analog inputs, so I want it going to the avr first because most bass management in bdos is nto very good (at less in the cheaper ones I can afford).Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es
