I have had the Denon AVR-1611 receiver for about 6 months & i have been really pleased with it. It pushes 75 watts to each speaker (its a 7.1 receiver but i use it as a 5.1 setup). I have two Monitor60's as my Front L/R & i would like to move those to my rear L/R. Im waiting for the Monitor70 to go back onsale (Newegg) and going to use those for my fronts. Do you think my receiver will work fine with the 70's as the fronts and the 60's as my rears?? (I have a PSW10 sub but gonna replace that soon with a PSW505). Any feedback would be much appreciated.

THANKS!

I was running an onkyo rc270 with my 70's. It sounded fine, but when I got an external amp the 70's really woke up. I am now powering the 70's and my cs2 off of an acurus A200x3 amp.

Alot of folk say the 70s will sound better with an external amp, I do not have any direct experience with this (yet). I can tell you that I am currently running a denon 1611 and have 70s and a cs2 up front and 60s for the surrounds and a 505 for the lows and I love it. No problems for HT or music, everything sounds really good. Just play with placement of the speakers until you get best results according to your ears.

Actually, it doesn't push 75 watts to each speaker. I believe in 7 channel mode,it drops considerably to around 22 watts per speaker,5 channel mode is probably around 40-50 watts. You can drive those speakers with it,but they will benefit from some added power. I don't think you have preouts though to add an amp.

while it is true the 1611 is a little lean when running 5 or 7 channels at once, but in the real world of multi channel HT how often are you running all channels to max power at the same time? And also remember it takes very little power to achieve good above average listening levels. The 1611 powers my set up to more then satisfactory results. I do have plans to get my hands on a 3311 in a year or so and add an amp, but for now it is just fine with my 5.1 living room set up.

It's not a matter of running it at max. power. It's about having current, and the capacity to deliver it when those transient bomb blasts come around or loud soundtracks.
While that avr is fine for what he's doing, it has limits, and usually one upgrades speakers first before deciding the rest of the electronics needs to follow suit.

Agreed that it is a limited avr, just about all are in one respect or another.

In my real world experience with that avr and an almost identical speaker set is that it is fine powering the 70s, transients, bombs, explosions et al sound fine, no clipping, no noticeable distortion. Clean clear crisp and loud if want it to be. Is it perfect, does it meat true audiophile standards? No. Will it put a big **** grin on the listener....cant say, but it does for me.

I do fully get that the 70s will really shine with more clean power, but they work remarkably well for me right now, and I would like to relay my experience to the OP.

If that was my system, I would replace the sub first.

what kind of sub would you recommend in the $300 range. I was thinking about going with the PSW505 (to match my monitor series)?? You can get it for a deal right now on Newegg.
