So what's the story? Is it a better build quality than the Oppo BD83? Is the tray a flimsy thing as a the BD83? How does it sound? Can it play Bluray music out the two channel? Does it seem worth $1000 for a two channel player?

I'm hooking it up now,I'll let you know, later.I remember, paying the same amount for a HI-FI VCR,when it came out years ago.By next year this time, the price be will much less, than what I paid for it.I got 30 days to return it,if not satisfied.

It's a d@mn good player, I've been using it since early February via the Oppo Early-Release program. I actually connect it directly to the amp via balanced XLR cables for my 2-channel setup; I can configure my speaker level via its Audio processing menu. Playing Bluray music out of the 2-channel? You bet it can. And yes, the tray is still flimsy. I've gone through all four: BDP-83, BDP-83SE, BDP-93, and BDP-95. Even though I liked the additional 2-channel balanced output, I would say it's not worth upgrading from the BDP-83SE to this BDP-95. However, it surely worths $1000 for a 2-channel player, not to mention a universal player, playing all Bluray, DVD, DVD-A, SACD, and a music/picture/movie server via eSATA/USB external hard drive hookup.

Has there been any comparisons between the 95 and other $1000 players? If so what was the verdict?

This question will need to be answered by others, leroyjr1, since I currently don't have any other $1000 2-channel player to compare. Keep in mind the Oppo 95 utilizes one of the best DAC chips out there.

That is not recommended as it squashes the dynamic range. The volume control is done in the digital domain. If you run the volume control on the oppo down below 90 you are losing musical information.

No doubt. My 83SE does it quite nicely as well.

Yeah, but I have seen much worse. Just treat it well and it shouldn't be a problem.

Balanced outs would be nice. They went to toroidal transformers too. But I did decide to stick to my 83SE for now.

Clyde, I would give it at least a couple hundred hours of break-in before I started judging the SQ. Mine got pretty sweet around 500 hrs. Harshness diminished and stage was bigger and weightier.

Good info to share here, vc69. Thanks  Believe me, I was startled the first time I played music with the volume at the default level of 100. I thought my speakers were gone, too, but the LSi15's wasn't damaged by it (even though my ears were)

LoL... yeah, I've hooked mine up direct just to check it out.

You may want to consider a passive attenuator like steveinaz has/had. They are relatively inexpensive and about as straight line with a volume control as you can get.

Maybe you got a lemon? They are made in China after all.
I'll grant you the tray could be beefier, but I've not noticed #2 and #3.
Do you have anything on top? I had a replica aladdins lamp (bronze) on mine and occassionally would hear "bizzing" sounds. It drove me nuts. I could restart it and it would not come back.. .
One time it started again and I got up real close..It was the lamp.
    Placed it elsewhere..bizz was gone.
For peace of mind, it would be good to sell the 83se and get a 95 or a W4S...I wanted to go to the 95 for the XLR connections. I didn't because what, I'm going to buy a new disc player every year?
    Good luck to you

Over at the AVS thread on the 95, some have noted that when the 95 is in DSD direct to DAC mode that some discs have 'tics' (Peter Gabriel, SO, for example).

When they switch to PCM to DAC, the 'tics' go away.

May want to check how you are playing that SACD.

    Bababouey,

Are the problems you are experiencing with the 83SE or the 93/5?

If is the 83SE, have you updated the firmware? I haven't had any problems out of SACD/DVD-A for over a year. The problem you are describing was well known and fixed with a firmware update a long time ago.

If it's the 95, you need to report the problem to Oppo so they can fix it, which they will no doubt. They are awesome about addressing issues and very responsive with firmware.

I tried switching from DSD to PCM.
The problem dissapesred for a couple of tracks and then returned.
I switched back to DSD and same thing..the problenm disappeared and the returned.
Switched back again and same thing.
    Very odd.
Obviously this is wear the issue lies.
I will play around with the settings tomorrow and see if I can rectify.

What happens if you select to play the CD layer only thru the Oppo?

Just trying to isolate your problem with the SACD layer on this disc, or if you have a 'bad' disc?

It plays fine on CD layer.
I have tried 2 different discs of this recording and I have the same problem with both.
    It is an 83SE, not a 95.

Sounds like it is either the player is having problems with that SACD which Oppo may be able to fix with a firmware update -

or - its a common problem with that SACD - try googling that title to see if others are noting the same problems.

If you have access to another SACD player to try it in that may help.

Sounds like you've isolated it to an issue with the 83SE.

You should notify Oppo and see if they are willing to fix the problem with a new firmware update.
