About 2 month ago i came to this site to get some info on a driver that had blown on a polk monitor 5. Lot's of reading ensued, excitement grew about this audio subject. About a week later i ended up buying a pair of monitor 70's and a week after that a harman kardon 3490. Couple weeks later a cambridge audio cd player arrived. found myself wanting more.
I listen to almost exclusively music so began looking into seperates. I've recently inquired about an emo xpa-2 and rsp-2 preamp on audiogon. During that time my boss mentioned he was upgrading his system. He offered me a b&k reference 200.7, b&k ref 50 pre, rotel ra1062 integrated and a blu ray player for $1000. All in pristine condition. Maybe 6 years old.
Seems like a great deal but do i need it? Is it something to get and maybe move into more of a theatre situation down the road even though at this point that does not interest me at all? Would it be a good set up for mainly music?
Thanks for any advice!

See what he would take for that B&K amp, that will come in handy later on when you want to upgrade your speakers.

That's a pretty fantastic price. It is bigger than you need for 2-channel, but all together it seems like it would be worth close to twice what he's asking for it, so you could flip some and go with something more tailored to your needs if you don't like the bulkiness of it. I have some B&K gear of the same vintage and love the sound.

The amp is great, and worth buying, (even though you won't use the other channels), but you'd be better off with a tube pre if your for 2-channel only. I've owned the B&K ref 30 and both my Cary and Dared tube pre outperformed it. This combo would clearly outperform the integrated you have now. PS, I personally would not buy an EMO over B&K.

It's all part of a bonus so i don't feel like i'm spending anything. Think there is some kind of a digital splitter(?) involved also. Not sure how he had this set up in his house. It was mentioned about a tube preamp. Whtat kind of cost is invloved there. Guess i could flip the pre amp, rotel integrated and digital splitter, buy a different preamp and maybe put some money away for a speaker upgrade later this year. The idea of using the amp for just 2 channel doesn't seem like a waste? Not using the other 5?

Buy it all and sell the pieces you don't want.

There are quite a few options (check within this site), but I found the Dared sl-2000 preamp for $450 to be quite a bang for the buck, and is competing quite well with my Cary unit that was over double the price. Still deciding which one to keep - each one has things I like about it.

Now your talking like a true audiophile!

Actually I've read, and somewhat witnessed, that the much larger transformer is quite a bit more dynamic (punchier bass, more controlled).

$1k for all that equipment is quite a steal even if it's not a scroe by AKer standard.

Thanks everyone for the input. Read the ref 50 manual, holy sh#t! Lots 'o options. Think i'll get it, hook it up, and give it a listen. The ref 50 looks like more i'll ever need. I mentioned doing a speaker upgrade in the near future. If that's the case should i wait to look for another pre? When looking at a pre are you factoring in the type of speakers you have or is it more your listening preferences? If i'm mainly doing 2 channel am i looking for a 2 channel pre? I live up near yellowstone and have very few options to go out and audition different pieces. Thanks again

The 200.7 is worth more than 1000 on the used market by itself depending on condition. That alone should tell you its a steal. I would be willing to get that rotel integrated off your hands if you do make the purchase and dont wan it. Man I paid close to that for my B&K 7250 about 9 months ago by itself including shipping though. Wow why cant deals like that ever come up around me.

    That's a deal. I paid 1450 for my 7270 SII a few years ago.
