I was listening to some old Julie London stuff tonight when I realized just how much Diana Krall sounds like Julie. Style, phrasing, pace, sauciness. I am probably way way behind the rest of you on this but it was a real holy crap moment for me. Thank you. Carry on.

Yes, I understand Julie secretly planned to capitalize on Diana Krall's sound.

I'll take Julie London over Diana Krall any day. JL might not be quite as pitch perfect as DK can be, but damn is her voice nice to listen to. I think Diana Krall sounds a little too much like Kathleen Turner. (Apologies to any Krall hardcores.)

I did purposefully word it the other way around. I think Diana's totally trying to reinvent Julie's sound though. Not a bad thing.

As for the Diana Krall sounding like Kathleen Turner.....well maybe if she started smoking 5 packs a day I'd hear that.

    Julie hands down.

Must be in the stars. Walked into the GW this afternoon and the Gal was putting a handful of LPs out. Got 16 of them of which 5 were perfect Julies'. Gonna clean them and spin some when the sun goes down. Diana who?

Diana Krall is a pretty good pianist; otherwise pretty much a waste of space as far as I am concerned (not that Elvis would agree...).

Julie London, on the other hand, was multi-talented.

My "Best Of Julie London" CD arrived, and she is good. I am surprised at how many Diana Krall songs she covers.

I just listened to the Diana Krall and Julie London versions of Cry Me a River back to back, and I think Krall actually has the stronger voice, but London has the voice I'd rather listen to. I might have to get that Best of CD... pretty sure I have all those songs already, but it looks like it's got a bunch that are remastered. The remastering on the Ultralounge Julie London album is pretty outstanding too.

I'm glad somebody brought up these two wonderful singers. I absolutely love Julie London, she had the sexiest voice ever, and I don't think she ever got the recognition she deserved. Did anyone else think of her when Jessica Rabbit sang in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I remember that Julie London gave me a major woodie as a precocious youngster during the late 50s and early 60s. I also remember that I liked her singing. Not until this thread was I interested in going back. Youtube has some nice selections with a montage of photos from the 40s-50s and 60s. She sure was something. DK certainly borrows stylistically from alot of torch singers, but this is a good comparison.
